This is great. I have an old 80 gig video that is in nearly perfect condition aside from the top layer of the screen having natural cracks (no breaks) and the battery not taking any charge. I've been thinking of refurbishing it. I don't know what it is, but aside from my expensive amp/dac system it makes music sound the best ive ever heard from any other source. Plus I had installed it with that rockbox software which made having full albums of HQ music a possibility. What a great device. If apple just started a retro line of products and released their old shit they'd probably reach 2 trillion value in a year.

If anyone does decide to take on this project, make sure you get an iPod Video Enhanced (5.5.) The easiest way to tell if its the right version is to look for the search menu item. This was the last version with the Wolfson DAC, which is the best one that the iPods ever came out with.

Installing Rockbox is a breeze, but make sure you do your initial format with a windows machine so the cards are formatted through iTunes to FAT32.

Also, when you're removing the battery ribbon, be extremely careful to gently open the connector vertically. Its only three thin pins that can break easily. The disk and click wheel ribbons are a breeze to reseat. It'll seem tough on the first go, but once you get it, you'll be able to do it in seconds.

For you, @hungariantoast, definitely do this project. Check that iFlash site for compatibility. The installation is trivial and aliexpress has lots of custom parts to really make for a nice build. For mine, I did a black rear panel along with a black headphone jack and lock switch (which has a little orange when its locked) -- https://i.imgur.com/omtqY2E.jpg

Two years ago, my wife and were playing in some snow outside our apartment building and I came back into our apartment and couldn't find my iPod. A week went by and I finally found it sticking out of the ground by my door. Put that fucker in rice for two weeks and it turned right on like a charm. It is still kickin' it to this day, probably close to 10 years since I've had it.

I've thought about upgrading it to a better battery or a solid state, but I think I'm going to wait until it dies to do so. My best advice is to never use iTunes to manage your music on your iPod (as well as in general). I honestly believe that it causes more harm to iPods then it does any good. I use Winamp, personally.
