Lot of scary stuff that I missed out on:

On May 10, The New York Times broke the news that a cell phone location tracking company called Securus Technologies had been selling or giving away location data on customers of virtually any major mobile network provider to local police forces across the United States.

A few weeks after the NYT scoop, KrebsOnSecurity broke the story that LocationSmart — a wireless data aggregator — hosted a public demo page on its Web site that would let anyone look up the real-time location data on virtually any U.S. mobile subscriber.

If only the cypher-punks and crypto-anarchists got their shit together back in the 90s and focused on user experience to make it easier for people to use PGP and web of trust because that effectively solves this problem of trust and makes it easier to go password-less.

Why does nobody complain about Cisco being complicit in human rights abuses for their part in building the Great Firewall of China?

One part forgetfulness and one part laziness? That's my excuse at least :D

It feels like the same behavior of American companies within America is underplayed, but when other nations do it, suddenly it's a story.

Let's not get into whataboutism. It's just capitalism and dictatorships of any sort or any corruption can co-operate very very well. And both American and Chinese companies are into profits though Chinese companies have a stronger ideological component attached to them.

I don't get Americans and I am one.

I'm Canadian and sometimes I don't get them either! :P

There are just way too many security issues with cellular networks, phone software vulnerabilities, and profit-maximizing carriers to trust my identity to my phone. That's what multi-factor tools (not SMS) are for.

Honestly, for large financial transactions (e.g. >$100), I'm just as happy to sustain the inconvenience of appearing in person to validate that I am who I say I am.

What are they going to do about those of us who just use a basic flip phone?

I’m strongly considering dropping my smartphone in favor of a flip phone, prepaid. I waste so much time just thumbing through reddit when if I were at the computer I wouldn’t even bother and just get straight to work. Instead I’ll find myself lounging around on the couch wasting time away. With all of these security and privacy concerns honestly I don’t know why I haven’t given it up yet!
