The crash could probably be resolved by PeerTube doing some smarter stuff surrounding device detection and transcoding and quality selection. It already does some basic transcoding but there's a lot of room for improvement. Transcoding issues on issue tracker
Based on their architecture doc it seems like the majority of the effort has been devoted to the peer-to-peer and federation aspect, rather than on the video player itself.
Win 10, Firefox 62.0.3 It worked fine in Chrome, Opera and Edge though. I suspect me having a bajillion tabs open in Firefox may have had something to do with it. ;)

Just out of curiosity, what OS and browser?
For me it worked well on iOS Safari.
