I feel like the only way is to move to Europe. They are still far from perfect, but are at least taking this kind of shit somewhat seriously with moves like GDPR.

It's not a bad idea truthfully. I think this year I'm going to spend a few months doing something like that. There's festivals and camps you can find in the US that are off the grid. I spent winter of 2016 in Slab City and I may try a Rainbow Gathering this year. I've heard from old heads that it has gone south over the last decade but it'll be new to me.

The Rainbow Gathering I might have heard about a long time ago but the wiki article is really negative so I would love to hear from people who's actually been there if this is accurate?

You just find a patch of land you like that hasn't been marked off as claimed, and set up shop. There are definitely some camps there that offer more amenities where you might need to reserve a small living space like a camper or something and that can cost.. But most people live out of a van or a tent or improvised shelter.

An AT&T announcement yesterday said that its real 5G network will be ready nationwide in early 2020, using sub-6GHz spectrum.

I vaguely remember them pulling this same exact shit with 4G. Even when their networks were only slightly faster than 3G, they still called it 4G anyway.

It would not surprise me at all to hear it were true. The telecom companies in the US operate with impunity. Unfortunately the situation is not going to change under the current administration...

Same. I remember someone at the phone store in Australia telling me that our 3G is the same thing as Americas 4G.

How is this legal? As far as I'm aware, you can't blatantly lie to people about your product. If you try selling someone a 1080p TV by telling them it's really 4K, that's called fraud. How is this...

Yes, that's why networks are branded as LTE. When they first started claiming to have 4G networks it was the same as this 5G situation. The carriers didn't meet the definition and had to label their networks as 4G "Long Term Extension", which is actually worse than 4G. LTE bridges the 3G and 4G specifications.

What's interesting is the cell network companies managed to present this downgrade as an upgrade. To an ignorant consumer those three extra letters make it 4G+.
