Between this and retooling the algorithm to give less prominence to conspiracy channels it seems like Youtube is finally taking some steps to address the issues of their platform being a vector for disinformation.

Still not a big fan of them overall but I'll applaud steps in the right direction.

Succinct and to the point. Science is the arbiter. Google is just the implementation mechanism. When companies reverse this directional flow of truth, then we have a problem. Until then, it's fallacious to call it a slippery slope. It's just common sense.

Let's be pragmatic here. WMD's in Iraq is a politicised topic, not a scientific one. It's also not a topic that is a danger to not just families, but society as a whole. Anti-vaccination rhetoric certainly is, and vaccines themselves are backed by incontrovertible science. Just like climate change is, just like the the world being a sphere is.

I don't see how what you're saying is a defensible position considering the gaping chasm between the inherently political nature of one subject matter and the intrinsically provable nature of another.

But what if Google went the other way, supporting anti-vaxxers instead? I think that's the concern of @klc. Science is the arbiter, but the company can misunderstand. And while anti-vaxx is so obviously misguided, there are other issues that are less so. For example, I find that quite a lot of people don't understand what evolution is about, regardless of them "supporting" it or not. Similarly with many issues regarding religion.

I am uncomfortable with a corporation [...] deciding what information is false and should be demonetized.

This has nothing to do with science or politics.

In the case of scientific topics, it actually has everything to do with it.

I like how Google is implementing links to counter-argument information across multiple platforms. I look forward to seeing how this plays out in a way that continues to educate people and/or allows for continued conversation in the mainstream - instead of outright blocking. Because, even though I may disagree with something like anti-vax, I don't want them to seclude themselves into isolated echo chambers either. I don't think that helps the situation.
