This is... weirdly inaccurate reporting from Global. It has the wrong company credited in the headline, but the right company in the article? The source article they cite has all the right info too, including the important bit about BBMe.

Blackberry, the company, sold off consumer BBM years ago to Emtek. They're the ones shutting down the consumer version of BBM. Blackberry, the company, has retained and still maintains BBM Enterprise (BBMe), which is really the true version of BBM. The Emtek BBM was nothing but a vehicle for ads (so surprise! it failed).

Consider me late to the party, my first BlackBerry phone is KeyONE, and it had BBM out of the box - I never had a single contact there, yet kept getting spam in some languages I had no idea how to read. Whatever there was in BBM back in the days that people liked, I couldn't find anything to salvage there, so no wonder it got shutdown. Telegram is a much better service, that had been never locked to one vendor, has private chats and open-source client, so you would be able to make a client for any platform and not be locked down into "supported" platforms, so if anyone is looking for the alternative - I think Telegram is the best option right now.

This is probably what you had : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bbm
Versus : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bbm.enterprise (Which is still available)

Both are made by different companies. Also, BBM started decades before other messaging services on mobile, it was one of the main points from their feature phones.
