They mention people being afraid to browse their Tumblr in public back when porn was allowed, worried I figure about people noticing them looking at porn. Whenever I see that I believe I must be in a small category of people who just don't care what is on my screen or what people around me see, and if I'm just browsing through the feed when they do their double-take to check what they saw it would have already changed. IDK, as long as the person isn't actively masturbating or being creepy why should I care what somebody else is doing?

Personally I'm still afraid of the day that Reddit decides they want to take a more anti-porn stance and start getting rid of it also. It honestly feels like it is the last old school bastion of content that you can find anything you want, and advertisers hate it so I guess it is only a matter of time. Already I see troubles with their various bans of stuff like naked anime-style girls that could be young and inconsistent monitoring and enforcement.

Thing is they've made basically 0 progress on this front. Porn is still everywhere. I'm still mindful of where others are when I open Tumblr because every now and then I still get naked bodies popping into my feed. And I'm not even following any of the still-thriving porn blogs. Tumblr isn't porn-free by any standard. It's just gone into hiding. And it seems like the filters are no longer marking any new posts as far as I can tell, just old ones remain marked.

The problem as I see it is that they've achieved what basically amounts to a lose-lose situation--the site's flawed algorithms have failed to remove all NSFW content from the site, yet they've also managed to drive off many of the content creators who worked to make quality NSFW posts, such as art, and even discouraged others who don't post NSFW because their work also gets accidentally sorted into the banned category. What does remain is mostly just spammy bots which post the same low-quality content repeatedly and manage to avoid the filters.

So basically tumblrs userbase got cut by a not insignificant amount and they literally have nothing to show for it. I know that the article talks a lot about what people had been able to post but lets be real for a second; someone I know was one of the people who used tumblr for exclusively porn. I looked at their feed a few days ago and what did I see? A shit ton of porn. And no, it wasn't soft core or mildly censored, it was still straight up porn. Tumblr has been known to do a lot of things to actively hurt their own userbase and wow, they sure did it big this time. There are still a fair amount of people on that hell site but I am not one of them anymore.

The porn can simply hide in other tags or just simply have no tags at all. It doesn't seem like there's a system to automatically review what's being uploaded. I have no clue what sort of algorithm they used to "get rid" of their porn/nude images/etc. but from first hand experience it's absolute garbage. I personally hope that it just dies a slow haunting death and the last vestiges will be regurgitated monthly memes that have been deep fried and are screenshots of reddit from twitter from tumblr. The ouroboros is nigh.

In a slightly more serious manner, what did they honestly expect? They wanted to be more ad friendly? They obviously couldn't moderate their content worth anything so they figured well may as well get rid of it all. Hopefully someone's sweating about their decision but I highly doubt it. I'm still immensely disappointed at the actions they took, mostly in part because there wasn't that much lead up and they went with the nuclear option first. I followed a lot of really great artists and awesome people and then it just got scattered to the four winds, because nobody uploads all on the same platform so now it's even more impossible to keep track of the artists I've come to love. Even if the fandoms are still active as well, boy howdy, it ain't what it used to be.

Not even that, it's still all there just a bit hidden from the public.
