This is clearly just a list of 100 random things, which is one of my personal pet peeves. There is no guideline for the things in here. 14 of them are smartphones. Three are speakers - not smart speakers, just regular bluetooth speakers. They even include the Toyota Camry, which has been in production since 1982!

That's the problem with most lists that contain a hundred things. Nobody can remember that many of anything. Even a team. You end up putting in anything that kinda sorta fits the criteria because you went and started with the headline before working on the article. You see it a lot on Top X00 games for <insert console/platform>. They're all gonna be decent games at least but once you start trying to gather 3 digits worth of anything the overall quality of the list is gonna start sinking.

Exactly. Because there is no quantitative measurement for social impact, nor does it have to be an absolute measurement. I correctly guessed that the #1 entry would be the iPhone 4 as soon as I began reading this article, which shows the kind of vague consensus which is used to produce these lists.

      14 of them are smartphones.

A smartphone is a gadget category, not a gadget—in the context of this article.

They even include the Toyota Camry, which has been in production since 1982!

Many products can have significant cultural or social impact beyond the year of their introduction, and in this case, they're likely talking about new models of the Camry, in its specific market pricepoint during the 2010's.

I get that, but even with such a vague consensus it's going to change based on where you are in society, and this article gets another one of my pet peeves, which is that it's written from the perspective of the rich. The reason why they said they mentioned the Camry was because it was the most common car for rideshare workers. Do you know the kind of people who pay for rideshare services a lot? People with a lot of disposable income.

Even if this list was supposed to be about social impact, it's got a huge lack of consistancy. They don't use categories for phones, but why do they use categories for other things like remotes with netflix buttons or LG 55-inch OLED TVs or Generic USB-C Hub?

And even then there are problems with the actual items listed. Why do they bring up the GTX 1070 when the RTX 20XX is far more impactful? Why do they mention Google Glass at all since it was never a consumer product? And then there are products which I haven't even heard of like Eero mesh routers or the Dexcom G5. I've heard of their competitors (or homebrew editions in case of Dexcom), but not these specific ones. And then there's the entry for the frayed lightning cable, which is just... it's just too much.

I agree with @Diff; by trying to list 100 items, the list ended up losing it's substance.

The Camry really doesn't make sense. The 2010s are the decade sedans died. This decade saw the Toyota RAV4 go from being a relatively niche car to being Toyota's most popular vehicle. Even though it was introduced in the '90s, the RAV4 would have made more sense than the Camry for this list.

Look at that SEO in the URL! Scrolling through this was fun throwback though. I forgot how recent some of these were.

Its not even an accurate URL. These aren't the best gadgets. Half of them are awful. Its a list of iconic gadgets like the samsung exploding phone and the annoying headphone adapter.
