    ★☆☆☆☆ UPDATED REVIEW
This stupid program doesn't even play AVI files and the developers are incredibly rude and disrespectful!

    Original Review

    ★★☆☆☆
I tried to use this to play my videos but it kept giving me errors about blobs and formats. I attempted to fix their program for hours and eventually gave up. Maybe the world is not yet ready for a feline-themed video player.

    Developer Response

I'm sorry, but our tool is not designed to work with videos or any other kind of binary files. It's just designed to concatenate text.

AlternativeTo is probably the best for general populous. Most of the time it'll have something viable, and does a pretty good job of being able to find replacements for commercial products...especially if you only know of something in terms of 'Product X isn't suiting my needs, I need something else'. I think it could grow into what you describe with more active users contributing comments and reviews.

It's worth noting that while you can't submit reviews to awesome-selfhosted, you can update info, and provide accurate details about the unique selling props of a given project. The awesome projects have been the easiest open source project to contribute to of any I've interacted with, and they genuinely just want to have the best information possible for everyone to pick a tool that suits the individual's needs. That said, if a certain tool has limitations or unique features in it's category, please shoot the project a pull request.

I'm interested in taking a crack at doing just this - making a Yelp for open source projects. If anybody is interested in helping, please let me know.
