Oh boy, what a time capsule of my favourite era of the internet. Unfortunately it requires a steady and active population to maintain the appeal and allure and I don't think that will ever come back and all the people I chatted with are pretty much long gone.

I still can't believe Microsoft thought fusing it into Skype was at all a good idea, ugh. Ballmer-era Microsoft is truly one of the dumbest corporate entities to have ever existed.

I fear you're probably right, for me the biggest part of msn was the irl aspect of it. Going around giving your addy (idk if this was commonplace, but we called the email your addy bc its what you use to add people) and coming home with a list of your friends addys. Carefully typing them in making sure to get all the numbers and XxCapitalZation correct, then the awkward first message even though you've been friends for a while. Not to mention the group chats you'd randomly get added to and be exposed to an entirely different circle of friends for just a moment before someone nudges the group and everyone leaves... memories.

but even if it doesn't take off again it'll be nice to have the server-side part of it. It's devastating when "the servers" get taken offline and lost forever, especially in games. Even just logging into it and flicking around the interface is cathartic for me. Flooded with memories I didn't know I'd lost.

Not because it's your email address? That's how I always interpreted that.

Ahhh that's funny in retrospect. Probably a case of that "telephone game" effect losing things in transmission over year groups. Since for us and the years above/below us it was definitely an "addy to add people" vs just being short for email address but now that you've pointed it out - I'm certain it started that way for sure
