Daily Tildes discussion - annoyances so far?
Not a very "deep" discussion topic, but I think I'll try to leave more formal ones for weekdays since that tends to be when people are around more.
So just a general question: in the short time you've been using the site so far, is there some pesky thing that's already annoying you? Something that takes too many clicks, information where you don't expect it, etc.?
Is it possible to have a higher contrast mode for display? Especially for the "light" mode I'd prefer if there were a black text on white background option.
Yeah, I think it should be pretty possible to just add some standard "black on white" and "white on black" themes as well, and maybe just leave the Solarized light/dark ones as options. I've definitely had a few people tell me that they're not really fans of the tan/yellow-ish default scheme.
(I actually considered making this topic specifically about the color scheme instead of general annoyances, so I guess that kinda worked out anyway.)
fwiw, I really like the light theme. it's refreshing compared to the billions of black and white themes out there
I'm not a fan of the beige. It gives that "just moved in to a new apartment and I can't put nails in the wall" feeling.
I'm not a fan of the light mode colour palette either. It's not bad, I'm just not crazy about it.
I actually kinda like it shrug
I noticed I wasn't able to link to a specific comment earlier, just the thread itself -- minor annoyance though
Ah yeah, that's a good one. Thanks, I'll add it to stuff that I want to get done fairly soon.
I'd like a report button at some point. Especially given the recent appearance of political opinion posts without a framework for how political content will be handled.
Probably a good plan, though I'm also not sure exactly how I should be handling reports at this point. Should I just remove a post entirely if I think I need to? Should there be some record of that, so that other people can see what I've removed (and probably why)?
Case by case basis for reports using your own judgement is probably best for now. Removals and editing actions should definitely be auditable even at this early stage though, as seeing what you remove/edit and your reasoning for such changes will help us determine what you see as unacceptable content, titles, comments, links, etc and we can then hopefully have some productive discussions about it.
As for a mechanism to track removals/changes, even a simple changelog would probably be sufficient for now and relatively easy to implement for you. When you add community editable titles, links, tags, etc. that can be a good place to collect it all as well, until a better means of handling action auditing can be determined.
E.g. A wikipedia style View History tab for each group or the meta-community suggestion we talked about way back when, where every group has a mirror community for meta related discussions, including auditing of actions and discussing rules/policies.
Yeah, this is definitely a high-priority one that I'm hoping to have out in the next couple of days.
I made a small change earlier today that increases the font sizes of a few things (including those) on mobile, let me know if you think that's any easier. I'm doing some other tinkering with the layout of the topics in listings still, so maybe with a bit of rearranging/spacing this can be made easier too.
No comment reply notification is HUGE and the most critical missing feature of the site, IMO. Without it, it feels practically pointless to respond to people since you're essentially just talking to the void unless the person you're responding to just so happens to stumble back upon the thread to notice you have replied. It's incredibly discouraging to not have your reply seen and completely kills the conversation potential of the site.
Not sure if that has already been addressed. I noticed that toggling themes aren't saved to a user. I only noticed this when accessing the site between different computers. I don't know if this would be classified as an annoyance but I figured you all might appreciate this, ignore this comment otherwise.
Steps to recreate:
Nevermind, just saw the gitLab issue tracker and see that this issue has already been presented and has discussion surrounding it. Please ignore.
The new highlight for if a comment is new puts a left red border on the comment. The discussion threads topic title also has a red left border. This is confusing to me a bit, makes me think either the thread is new or the new comment is a discussion or admin post.
Yeah, they should really be different colors. Originally the "new" color (for comment highlights and notifications by your name) was a yellow color, but I think it only looks good in the Solarized Dark theme, so I stopped using it and switched to orange.
