Suggestion: Users can upload GPG public keys
Users can upload gpg public keys for DMs and Clear Sign comment bodies.
Honestly, a very very low priority feature request, but what is the initial feeling on something like this?
Like many of the requests here, I'd worry about software bloat/feature creep. I'm a fan of the Unix philosophy: Make each program do one thing well. To do a new job, build afresh rather than complicate old programs by adding new "features". Tildes isn't a messaging service, it's a discussion site. PM/DMs that are desired to be encrypted can use a different protocol.
As for signing posts, I think that keeping accounts pseudonymous and ephemeral would discourage the development of power users or royalty. Users should let their comments stand on their own, not on their identity (or account age, karma, etc).
Absolutely. If I want to message someone securely, I have a half-dozen services on my phone and computer that receive push notifications, handle key management, et cetera. Tildes doesn't need PKE support, and almost nobody would use it, anyway.
One can always still opt to use GPG/PGP to create an encrypted message and post it in the Tildes PM box. The beauty of GPG/PGP is that it's not bound to a specific protocol. It can be applied to any messaging protocol.
There's also the possibility of someone implementing this feature into a third party app, browser plugin, etc. in the future with the API.
Agreed on that front!
On the other side, there is almost a basic requirement for every social network to be able to communicate within itself between two or more people privately.
If that reads like shit I’m sorry I’m tired
Yes, one could screenshot it. But one could also fake the screenshot.
Encrypted DMs aside for a moment.
I feel that too many are worried about hate speech. Technically speaking, "hate speech" doesn't even exist. We've worked ourselves into this self censorship mentality where we're scared to use our free will as humans. I'm not advocating for the promotion of violence at all. But I also remember a time when it wasn't taboo to believe in the first amendment and generally speaking, eveyone was on the same page about that.
Not trying to start anything. I'd love to hear other opinions on the matter.
The first amendment is irrelevant because for one, Tildes' operating body is located in Canada and abides by Canadian laws, not American, and two, we are talking in the context of a privately owned website, not a lawful governing body.
Hate speech most certainly does exist as a concept, and it is not welcome here.
My main feature ask is simply a way to host the public key. Not really an encryption/decryption function.
Still seems like feature creep for something precious few people will ever use.
Can you add arbitrary social-media sites to Keybase? I know people use it with Reddit, etc.
Sadly not, still. Progress over there seems to mostly have been focused on feature creep, to be honest - you can now host git repositories on Keybase...
