Looks like development has slowed down considerably and still no user created ~ permitted, wondering about the longevity of this site as a replacement for Reddit with the ridiculous API changes coming down the pipeline there. Anyone have any info on this as there will likely be an influx of users based on the invite thread on Reddit, so more just asking in advance.

That's the thing, I would love for more sites to have low cost subscription options like that. Sure, it would take a decent number of people subscribing to support development and Infrastructure costs, but for a link aggregation and discussion site, I would imagine an optimized site wouldn't require a lot of infrastructure per user (~ for example).

Definitely my favourite takeaway from this:

“Our plan for the Naples-Rome-Milan roadmap was based on assumptions around Intel’s roadmap and our estimation of what would we do if we were Intel,” Norrod continues. “We thought deeply about what they are like, what they are not like, what their culture is and what their likely reactions are, and we planned against a very aggressive Intel roadmap, and I really Rome and Milan and what is after them against what we thought Intel could do. And then, we come to find out that they can’t do what we thought they might be able to. And so, we have an incredible opportunity. Rome was designed to compete favorably with “Ice Lake” Xeons, but it is not going to be competing against that chip. We are incredibly excited, and it is all coming together at one point. We have reintroduced ourselves to the market, gotten the initial traction and wins, we got the initial customer support, and we validated that AMD is a safe choice with an effective processor. With the Rome processor and process, we are going to be in an incredible position going forward.”
    - Forrest Norrod, AMD Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Datacenter and Embedded Solutions Business Group

Looks like AMD will be following up the success of Epyc v1 with continuing pressure on Intel. Definitely can't complain about solid competition in the CPU space, it's great seeing AMD back in the game like this.

Worked for a small IT MSP (managed service provider, essentially outsourced It for small businesses). I worked there for about 6 months. It was one other guy and myself handling everything and the owner of the business made 3 of us. Unfortunately I only ever saw the owner once every 2 weeks or so, he was hardly ever around to even see how things were going. We were always pinned with work. Then one of our clients in the next province and time zone over (1 hour ahead of us) wanted support starting at 07:30 their time. That meant that we had to be on the phones by 06:30 our time. Unfortunately the support window for local customers was until 17:00 our time.

Our owner did not hire anyone else beyond the two of us and we were told that we had to support that entire window, from 06:30 to 17:00. Thankfully he paid us OT for it so I made fairly decent money, but having just come out of school and this being my first gig in the industry, I burned out of this place fast, hence the only there 6 months. Once I left I kept in touch with the other guy I worked with. He stayed for a few more months but left once the owner wouldn't backfill my position, so it was literally just one guy doing all the work for the company. Once he left, the owner finally hired people, likely because he didn't like the idea of actually having to work at his own company. When the owner asked why I left I told him just what conditions we were working under and his response was "oh, I didn't realize it was that bad". I was speechless.

I'm a security and network analyst and a good portion of my job is to help troubleshoot problems that aren't necessarily network issues (it's never the network /s).
My biggest piece of advice is learn basic network troubleshooting tools and thought processes.

If you can't get to a website or something out on the network, try pinging (open command prompt, type "ping $destination"). This doesn't always guarantee a result either way if firewall policies block ICMP (network protocol that ping uses). This also helps to determine latency as the response time is also displayed when running the command. Run "ping -t $destination" to have the command run in perpetuity, useful when doing testing or basic monitoring, saves running the command over and over again.

Another option to see where a potential issue may arise as to traceroute (tracert $destination). This will hit each router in the path to the destination, useful for determining a tiring issue, either if you can't get to a destination or if you're curious about the path your network traffic is taking too get to a destination.

The final piece of advice I have to give is for technical issues overall. Do some initial research and testing. If a user or sysadmin comes to me with an issue that they'd like my help investigating, I will go the extra mile for someone who can tell me what they've already tested and go into any more detail than just "it doesn't work". I much prefer helping people who try to retain information or learn so I don't have to do the same thing over and over again and self-research is a huge signal of at least some effort which I hugely support.

PS: If you need technical help and don't have anyone to ask, shoot me a message and if it's in an area that I have knowledge/experience in I will definitely try to help.
