feature request: allow changing the group being submitted to from the "post a new topic" page

Repro steps:

  • Go to ~foo and click "post a new topic"
  • Fill in title, link/text, tags etc
  • As you do so, realize the topic would fit better under ~bar

Currently the group you're submitting to is the only thing you can't change from that page. The workaround is that you have to open ~bar in a new tab, click "post a new topic" there, and then cut & paste all the fields you already filled in.

This was a somewhat deliberate decision, for at least two reasons (which admittedly aren't very relevant yet):

    1. I don't really like the idea of people posting to groups that they haven't visited first (or potentially ever). Making them go through the group to get to the submit page at least encourages taking a quick glance to see what other posts are currently active in it, see if the thing they were submitting is already there, and so on. If you can change the group from the submit page it basically just lets you throw posts into a group without even viewing it. People do this a lot on reddit.
    2. In the future it may be possible that different groups have different submission processes, sets of rules/guidelines displayed on their submit page, and so on. In addition, we definitely want to have autocomplete for common tags, but that changes based on the group. Things like this will be difficult or strange to make work well when the group can be changed during the submission process.

It's not a general solution, but for you personally, you have the permissions set up to be able to move topics between groups, so you could always just post and then move it afterwards.

Both of those make sense, and are angles I hadn't considered. Thanks!
