It could also 'live' at multiple places in the hierarchy where the topics overlap. It's short name would probably be ~cryptocurrency, and you could find it at ~comp.cryptography.cryptocurrency, ~economics.cryptocurrencies, etc. They'd all point to the same place. Overkill for now, though. I wonder if the hierarchies here will ever get that complex.
I'm sure plenty of groups would want to fight over being the ~crypto shortcut, which is why that'd be a disambiguation page linking to all of them.
... which is why we maybe don't have a ~crypto shortcut at all. Force them to differentiate themselves as ~cryptography and ~cryptocurrency and whatever, so there's no confusion.

I like the idea of multiple ~handles pointing to one group. Could be a bit of a mess though. I guess it could have posts made in a ~economics.cryptocurrency enforce an economics tag when displayed...

I don't know if I'd want to see ~economics.cryptocurrency discussion merged with ~tech.cryptocurrency, I'm very interested in the technology aspect but I really don't care for the discussion...

Why do we need a ~crypto at all? Why would someone assume that was cryptocurrency OR cryptography when cryptozoology predates both? Don't create ~crypto at all, create ~cryptography and...

You jest, but a cryptozoology group would be a very interesting, if incredibly niche group. Perhaps a kind of satire group, that discusses the biology and zoology of creatures like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster as if they were real. Sadly, I doubt there would be ever enough activity to justify it.
It would almost certainly be ~tech.cryptocurrency, a lot of the future groups will come out of tags in existing ones.

But if you fragment the different subtopics too far, are any of the communities large enough to generate any real content and discussion?
Not now, when there are only 7,000 subscribers on Tildes. However, when there are 70,000 or 700,000 subscribers, that will change.

Don't create ~crypto at all, create ~cryptography and ~cryptocurrency so people don't need to be confused when they go looking for bigfoot.

"Cryptozoology" could be a tag within ~science.biology.

This seems pretty reasonable, don't think the majority would disagree. Would be interested in hearing the arguments of those who do.
