Sadly nowadays the onus of verifying journalistic and other types of information is mostly on us, the readers.

    Here are the main points, in case you can't watch;

How to break the cycle of misinformation:

    1. Read the entire article - if there is nobody willing to put their name next to the information or there's no sources cited it's a crap new source. Clean up your news timeline

    2. Find good journalists, follow them/share their work, tell people "Hey this is a well sourced article, you should follow this person."

    3. Do some lateral reading, use Google(reverse image search) to get to the heart of where that image came from.

Most importantly, think before you click and share something online, do some digging, try to fact-check it yourself and only then share information online. Do not spread misinformation.

What other ways do you combat misinformation? Discuss below.

Not only that, theres only 6 core developers and they developed it over the course of 12 months (according to the youtube description). Absolutely incredible!

I'm not talking about the quality the show is being shot at or anything like that (it looks fantastic in general), yet it seems like they've changed the lenses or perspective to be a bit more personal and close-up. For some reason this change seems to stick out to an annoying degree for me.

Hopefully it's a temporary thing I'll get used to, and it does seems to be a bit better in these 2 latest episodes. Maybe it was just the pilot that made me feel this way.

UPDATE: It does get better, seems it was mostly the pilot.

Just in case someone couldn't access the link for whatever reason or the URL changes in the future. I also summarized it a bit in case they didn't have time to read the whole thing.

EDIT: Actually, if anyone is curious on the formatting the site uses, check out this formatting help page. (Tildes utilizes CommonMark, a variation on the usual Markdown, which actually links to a really nice live preview playground that can be used until/if the site adds a similar feature for testing your markdown before posting.)

Hi @Phoenician_Flower, welcome to the site!

Here's an edited down summary on the origin of the name Tildes; If you want to read the whole explanation you can do so here.

Originally, I wanted to have a name related to the word "spectrum". I think that's a great term for describing an online community platform—a wide range of variance inside a whole.

...For multiple reasons, I started really liking the idea of using a tilde as the "marker" for a community on the site (for example, the music community would be "~music").

First, tilde is one of the only "unreserved" characters that can be used in web addresses (URIs).

That means that a tilde can always be used in a web address without needing to be escaped. This isn't true for many other symbols [...] A tilde should always be kept as a tilde.

In addition, the ~ symbol also has an association of "home" to many technical people. If you're using the Bash shell (or various others), a tilde can often be used to refer to the user's home location. [...] I like the idea of each community being thought of as "the home for <topic>".

It's also a bit of a throwback to common addresses on the early web, where users would host their website on a shared system under their username...

This and a couple other frequently asked questions have been answered, like @Deimos linked, in the documentation of the site and in previous threads (Which you can search for with the bar on the top right of the main site page).

You can keep up with the latest changes to the site on the ~tildes.official group; I also recommend giving the announcement post a read if you haven't already!

It seems there's a lot of interest from mainstream media/information companies in e-sports data, as this is the latest big acquisition of a gaming related analytics firm, last big one I remember being back in September (Nielsen Holdings acquiring SuperData Research)

Does interest from these massive corporations benefit the e-sports community? Any other thoughts?

Here's a couple more articles on these acquisitions:

This seems pretty reasonable, don't think the majority would disagree. Would be interested in hearing the arguments of those who do.
