An option to hide topics from the front page.

As per subject - it'd be nice to hide topics from the front page.

The use case is very simple - if I see a topic that I have no interest in, I'd rather for its spot to be taken by some other topic that currently sits "below the fold".

Hiding a topic should remove it from the front page only, but leave it visible on the group page. It would also probably make sense to mark the topic there in some way and have an "unhide" option there.

Alternatively, have a switch for the front page to toggle between "full view" and "view without hidden topics".

You can already filter out topics based on tags if there's specific tags you'd like to hide. And when you do, there's a link to a full view at the top of the topic listing to unfilter.

Filtering based on tags is only tangentially related, not really a good alternative.

Eventually. It's not a particularly high priority thing but I believe @what has a version of this working. So maybe soon? And yeah, I thought I'd mention it for the people that didn't know about...

I plan on doing some Tildes stuff either this week or next week, including topic hiding :)

Rather than just hiding topics, I'd like to have a Mark as Read button that can do a couple of different things depending on what you choose in the settings.

(I was eventually going to write my own suggestion topic on this, but I'll briefly go over it here.)

First of all, hiding read topics is a good and common feature, but fading them out so they're still visible, just less prominent than unread topics is another good feature.

A third option seems obvious to me, just changed the Mark as Read button to say Marked or Marked as Read or just Read.

It happens a lot to me on Reddit, and I've noticed it a few times on Tildes now, that I will be viewing an old topic and have wondered whether or not I have read it before.

Just like with Reddit, there's currently no way to determine if I have seen a topic or comment before unless I have voted on it, so that's what I do at the moment, I vote old topics after they've had time to not be important anymore.

No really, I'm pretty sure just about every topic from two weeks ago to the very beginning of the site has been voted on by me, because there's no other way to mark it as read.

Isn't that basically what :visited is for? When you click on a link (and presumably have then read it) it changes colours to let you know.

The reason I like my suggestion more than just a Hide button is that it offers greater flexibility by letting users decide what the button does from a list of options, rather than just having one button that does one thing.

The topic itself. I have the comment feature enabled and love it, but yeah, I'm looking for a way (that doesn't involve voting) to mark the topics themselves as read.
