I think there's a solid point being made that Tesla should really stop calling it "autopilot". It's not meant to be used as an autopilot, so why call it that and find yourself having to emphasize...

Because otherwise it's just another driving assistant that every manufacturer has nowadays. Maybe a little smarter, but nothing revolutionary - can't have that with Tesla.

I'm curious if renaming autopilot "smart cruise control" or "steering assist" woud help keep people safer. Clearly there is a dangerous perception gap between what the system does and what people...

The win in this gamble is they get tons of free advertising and word of mouth, everyone from consumers to media can't stop talking about them. In good times this means growth in spite of inefficient and expensive manufacturing, fears of cash shortages, delays in deliveries. Below a certain level, the company becomes immune to criticism.
The lose in this gamble is that no one is perfect, and in a business like vehicles where the stupidity of people (customers or others) or deadly problems with features (autopilot) will result in events that are out of your spin control.
Either other companies catch up and Tesla blends into the crowd of other electric car manufacturers or it ends up being the tallest blade of grass that ends up getting chopped off.
