I've seen a weirdly large number of truckers leaving their blinker on, and on my last road trip I saw a semi going way over the rumble strips multiple times. I really should have called the police, but that's also something new to me.

I always thought of these people as extremely professional.

Normally, for truckers (that I know) there's a lot of pride for following the rules of the road, written or unwritten. The company's (and by proxy the NHTSA) rules? Well, we gotta bend those to get the job done but keep on truckin' brother. So it's a fine line of which rules to follow and which ones you can break without getting fined - but they generally wouldn't carelessly break rules like not signaling or such.

That said, I haven't had issues with truckers driving like jackasses but perhaps all the extra bad drivers have blinded me to that. The trucks around me generally keep it clean. They signal early and I leave space for 'em.

I don't actually think that's correct. Even in "dystopian America" there are pretty strong laws about how much truck drivers can drive, and they are much more severe than I ever did on any of my long road trips.

Anyway, the Wikipedia article on this should suggest to you that your statement is incorrect.

I thought I remembered some scandal around the monitors, but I was mistaken. Instead, when I refreshed my memory, I found out that truckers merely work 60 hour+ weeks regularly, not counting loading/unloading time where they must be present but aren't paid for. All the while, they're not returning to the comfort of home, and for generally very low pay once everything is factored in. All things considered, I think it still qualifies as a tough working environment.
