Fascinating article. I still think that inter-city buses are quite useful in the modern era in the United States, as our highway system is far more built-out than our rail system, and we don't have to defer to private commercial vehicles the roads like Amtrak has to do with freight trains.
Speaking as someone who has taken a great deal of public transportation in my life, but has also driven close to 250k miles non-commercially, I have always appreciated public transport that was practical and affordable. I wish it was more prevalent in the US.
