Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
I have been watching Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. I've watched the first 4 episodes. Possibly spoilers in details.
In general, I get some kind of enjoyment out of things that are filmed near where I live. I have recognized several of the exteriors, and that is fun. I gave them ratings, but I rated them as an enjoyer of B movies horror.
Lot 36 - 7/10
Tim Blake Nelson and Sebastian Roché and Demetrius Grosse? Great. Tim Blake Nelson especially is an actor that I'll always enjoy, and he did a good job being unlikeable. The story hit all the points it was supposed to; there is not a twist, and you will know everything that will happen within the first act of the show; the director, Guillermo Navarro, throws absolutely no curve balls. That's not a bad thing, and I enjoyed this. Solid 7/10.
Graveyard Rats - 7/10
This is mostly David Hewlett delightfully chewing the scenery. I enjoyed him greatly. It also has a minor role for Julian Richings. Richings and Hewlett were previously in Cube, a favourite of mine. This has no similarities to Cube, other than that it is delightfully silly. Big rats infest graveyard is an awesome concept, and I enjoyed the deep underground church, which seemed to have a minor callback to Lot 36 as the statue of the demon seemed like it could have been the same demon from that episode. Another solid 7/10.
The Autopsy - 9/10
F Murray Abraham is great as the coroner, and Glynn Turman could play the frazzled, out-of-his-depth sherriff for the rest of his career and be great. This is solid sci-fi horror. The story is good, there is a well-telegraphed twist, the acting is great, the gore may be too much for some people, and I give this a 9+/10.The Outside - 8/10
Kate Micucci and Martin Starr are actors that I am happy to watch whenever I see them in something. I found this to be the hardest one to watch - it was visceral and sad. I didn't have any issue with the body horror aspect, but the relationship between Stacey and Keith and the end result were what got to me. Gonna give this a 8/10 - not quite as good as The Autopsy, but still quite good.https://www.distractify.com/p/cabinet-of-curiosities-filming-locations
Neat!
And some of the externals were filmed in and around Hamilton, which is pretty cool. One exterior was in the front yeard of a friend of my wife's; the same house has been used a few times on Murdoch Mysteries (inside and out)!
My sister had her house, kitchen and back yard, used as a filming location a few years ago which was kinda neat. They paid her quite well, and even paid a bunch of her neighbors to redecorate and repaint the outside of their homes to look similar so they could film exterior neighborhood scenes too. I can't remember the name of the show, or its working title, but it was some YouTube Red production. And heck, I actually don't know if the show ever even got released, since YouTube Red kinda died shortly afterwards. :P
ok, I might give up on Mosquito Coast and Shantaram. I like Shantaram, but I read the book and the series is just toooooo slow.
As for Mosquito Coast, its basically 'go here, fuck it up, go there, close call, also fuck that up...' on loop. I think they should split the episodes with a little flashback for five minutes or so that will inform the current episode.
F1 is done for the year and I can't wait for the next season. This was my first live season and it was super fun. That shitty Drive to Survive series brings a lot of people in, but it fabricates a lot of drama. Its still a good primer, but if you ever watch it, don't forget that almost all of the tension, drama, etc is bullshit.
The Guardians Holiday Special is really good. It’s crazy how something that James Gunn just farts out in a couple of hours is significantly better than most other comic book movie makers.
