I'm still far more excited about the upcoming Avatar Studios animated movies, which are supposed to be new storylines instead of rehashing ATLA Season 1 for the third time.

But this show looks like it was put together with at least some thought and care, and the trailer doesn't immediately scream red flag, so I'm hopeful it's not going to be awful.

But the original animated show is a genuine masterpiece, so I'm not super excited about this even if it turns out to be a decent adaptation. I'll still watch it regardless though. :P

I’m surprised to hear that, my friends and I loved Korra. Season 2 was my least favorite by far. The more self-contained(ish) nature of each season with much more complex and interesting villains than TLA really sold it for me. The bending throughout the show was also superb in my opinion.

I still definitely prefer TLA but not by a wide margin.

On the topic of the trailer… I’m very skeptical. It’ll obviously be better than the last movie but I can’t shake the uncanny valley nature of the bending.

Korra is an interesting case. On one hand, it's supposed to be a sequel but it's so different from its predecessor. It has a different narrative structure, themes and ideas. It's different enough to be an odd sequel. I can definitely see someone who loved TLA not being terribly excited about it, since it's too much of a new thing, and too little of a continuation.

On the other hand, it deals with more mature themes. To me, it felt a lot more relatable and interesting to watch. The show's narrative grew with its audience, being released some years after TLA. It wasn't a kid's show anymore.

I think that I am in another kind of minority: I prefer Korra to TLA, and it is a lot more rewatchable. I also loved the more diverse fight coreography. The only thing that lets it down is season 2, which is pretty much forgettable, except for the history of the benders. Ironically enough, season 2 is narratively the closest to TLA, since it's dealing with the same kind of "evil will destroy the world" scenario.

I'm with you on not being a fan of Korra. I think we're probably in the minority there though! I dunno, something about the writing or dialogue or characters just didn't hit with me. I think the most egregious thing I loved to make fun of was how side characters kept referring to them as teenagers but frankly the art looked like early 20s. Felt like a real "hello fellow kids" vibe for me.

I enjoyed the first 2 seasons of Korra. I kinda lost interest after that though.

So I never saw ATLA as a child, and even with its status as a cult classic, I never bothered to watch it as an adult until recently. I watched the first 6 episodes with my best friend last week, and I have been really enjoying it. It's quite clearly for kids, and very goofy, but the care and attention that has gone into it is astounding. It's a really fun romp so far, and I am enjoying that it's not taken any time to ramp up the plot. We're just straight in and getting to know the characters en route. It's a cool show, and I'm excited to watch more.

So, as an almost total outsider to the phenomenon, but someone who has very recently started watching the original, this looks extremely faithful to it. Like, the characters all look on point, the animation is there, and even the soundtrack is shaping up nicely! I was never burned by the movie like so many others, so I am totally free with my excitement for this show after seeing the trailer. I love fantasy settings, and if this show has as much love put into it as the cartoon so clearly has, then it'll be quite something. Roll on the 22nd of February!

I've watched the whole series twice: once as a kid and once as an adult. It is one of my favorite series of all time. I also really enjoyed Korra, but not as much as A:TLA.

In the trailer it looks it's staying true to the original. I recognized characters like Iroh, Jet, June and Bumi, which I think is good sign.

Overall though, I'm not holding my breath... Given Netflix history of bad adaptations and (recent?) garbage writing, I hope it's not a big flop, but I think it probably will be.

What made the original series so good was that despite being a kids show, it had REALLY good writing: dealing with themes like death, friendship, spirits, justice and revenge, nationalism and propaganda in an incredibly classy way: lovable characters and character development. Korra was handling similar themes, but through more complex villains and politics, and a messy plot. I think the "main quest line" of defeating Fire Lord Ozai, combined with the gang going on their own adventures was a great recipe, I hope they keep that.

After disasters like The Witcher, I'm very skeptical of Netflix adaptations and their writing. Does anyone have any counter-examples?

I'm probably going to watch the first episode, even if its just to hear the cabbages guy say "Oh no, my cabbages".
