I'm a CS 1.6 nerd with about 4000 hours, most of them on 5v5 mixes, and some on KZ stuff, and also some CSGO & CS2, so take anything I say with a big pinch of salt: I'm definitely not playing at a high level, but I can "feel" the game.

I tried out the SOCD on my Wooting as soon as it came out, mainly because I was interested to see if there is a big difference. Yes, it honestly did feel a bit cheaty. So did the HAL switches though...

The situation you describe in the comment would involve:

    • awareness of the flank (or info)
    • decision: engaging the flank (experience)
    • movement to get into a position to fire back (map knowledge)
    • predictions on how the flanker peeks (experience)
    • crosshair placement for their peek (map knowledge)
    • counter strafing (mechanics) [!!!]
    • aim & click (mechanics)

Yes, one of these would be different with SOCD, but, because of all the others, I think it would definitely still feel like "real" counter-strike skill, even if the counter-strafing wasn't as difficult as it would have otherwise been.

Is the fact that you didn't completely let go of the first strafe key before pressing the opposite key really that much more skilled? Mechanically, yes. But should it be? I don't know, after testing, part of me thinks it would still be an enjoyable game if it wasn't all that crucial.

I'm curious to see how much better or worse counter-strafing at pro level is with or without SOCD are. Are their mechanics already so good that it would barely help, or are those 3 ms of human error shaved off enough to make a big difference at that level?

Personally, part of me would have liked to see Valve lean into it the same way they did with jump throw scripts, with an option to enable SOCD by game settings. It would remove the advantage these keyboards have over regular keyboards.

The other part of me thinks this is a good move by Valve, because counter-strafing is such an important part of the game.

I still think counter-strike has enough other mechanics and micro decisions that if everyone had these perfect counter-strafes, the game wouldn't feel all that different.

Well it really is kind of wild that the game didn't completely die out. After Activision abandoned the game, there wasn't a way to buy it anymore, so people used P2P software like Hamachi or Tungle to emulate LAN play, which obviously wasn't a great way for the game to live on, as it was kind of a hassle.
The Blur community got really lucky that someone reverse engineered the Activision servers and networking, singlehandedly reviving the game (AMAX).
I'd honestly say the game is in a way healthier place now than when it was under Activision's control, and the graphics still hold up in my opinion (I find the style very pretty). Makes me wish for a law or something that would encourage game developers to release the source code of games they're not gonna support anymore.

I used to mod this game on PC (yay amax-emu). It's my favourite arcade racing game ever. I haven't played much since life got in the way, but seeing this comment I think I might go and play it this weekend!

When I was around 11, on Christmas my dad gifted me a book from the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan (I think the first one, Ruins of Gorlan). It's medieval, and it has some fantasy elements. At your daughters age I absolutely loved the HP books, when I got a new HP book I'd stay up all night reading it and finish it. The Ranger's apprentice series kinda filled the same niche of underdog adventurers in a fantasy world full of interesting stories and characters.

I've watched the whole series twice: once as a kid and once as an adult. It is one of my favorite series of all time. I also really enjoyed Korra, but not as much as A:TLA.

In the trailer it looks it's staying true to the original. I recognized characters like Iroh, Jet, June and Bumi, which I think is good sign.

Overall though, I'm not holding my breath... Given Netflix history of bad adaptations and (recent?) garbage writing, I hope it's not a big flop, but I think it probably will be.

What made the original series so good was that despite being a kids show, it had REALLY good writing: dealing with themes like death, friendship, spirits, justice and revenge, nationalism and propaganda in an incredibly classy way: lovable characters and character development. Korra was handling similar themes, but through more complex villains and politics, and a messy plot. I think the "main quest line" of defeating Fire Lord Ozai, combined with the gang going on their own adventures was a great recipe, I hope they keep that.

After disasters like The Witcher, I'm very skeptical of Netflix adaptations and their writing. Does anyone have any counter-examples?

I'm probably going to watch the first episode, even if its just to hear the cabbages guy say "Oh no, my cabbages".
