Without DirecTV I probably wouldn't be writing a comment in English right now. The only thing that bothered me was the lack of the FOX channel. That was dramatic for a fan of The X-Files in the 1990s. It was even more upsetting because all of my classmates had the competitor satellite dish, Sky, which had Fox.
Seinfeld, Friends, and SNL were among the most important factors for me to eventually become fluent in English. I put on CNN one day. Because it was live there were no subtitles. It suddenly started making sense to me. It was pretty magical. A world of content opened up before me.

But before that, the US government had blocked a proposed $19 billion merger of the companies in 2002 on competitive grounds.

Well, now it does. 1999 till 2020 was a pretty dark time collectively. Namely Microsoft basically getting a slap on its wrist in the late 90s is what kicked off the unmitigated tech oligopoly aquisition spree in the first place. It shouldn't have ever been permitted to get as bad as it has, but the laxation of all the rules (and general incompetance of the courts WRT tech) really fucked us.
Microsoft should have been forcibly divided back then, they never should have been able to build up a gaming division, let alone continuing to katamari every single thing they wanted in the wake of their triumph.
Under the deal, DirecTV will pay Dish’s owner, EchoStar, just $1 for Dish in exchange for assuming its billions of dollars in debt.
Private equity firm TPG, meanwhile, will acquire AT&T’s remaining 70% stake in DirecTV. The move comes nine years after AT&T purchased the company in 2015 only to sell a 30% stake to TPG in 2021, a DirecTV spokesperson told CNN.

I guess I kinda like DirecTV.
This really made my heart warm. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks CNN!
How quaint, I remember when that used to happen. Of course, I’m rather old.
Yeah, because it happens all the time.
