Dropout uses that? That changes my initial opinion, which was that people are not really looking to be nickled and dimed to death with even more streaming services. Although I know some do subscribe to some of the streaming services where content creators will post things first or more content.
I wish I had money enough to support all the content creators, but I'm poor.
I suppose having more options is no bad thing, but for me personally, I'm already stretched too thin everywhere else. But that quickly gets into politics. heh
More options could maybe lead to better content and services though. I wouldn't mind seeing a few more Dropouts appear. The success of these smaller, independent services might (hopefully) incentivize larger streaming networks to adapt, lower prices, or produce quality content of their own, all of which could be beneficial to the users.
Or that could all just be wishful thinking and they'll double down on exclusivity and walled gardens.
Also, I can see this helping out some smaller esport competitions and organizers so they don't have to rely on twitch or youtube for their vods.
I agree with the positive side. My only "complaint" is that even if it's a couple of bucks - that's a couple of bucks times a dozen people I'd want to support, and there goes my budget. hehe
Very true. Everything is a subscription nowadays. Some are more worth it than others, but at least with some of these smaller independent ones I might feel like my money would be going to the content producers themselves, rather than some megacorporation.
I believe College Humor created Vimeo and utilized it for it's Dropout service. I believe the parent company kept Vimeo when they gave College Humor/Dropout to Sam Reich. *I could be wrong, but I recall reading this
Dropout's site and app work pretty good for the most part. I think there's some improvement to be had. But I do like the idea of enabling more streaming service. Both as a solid business idea for Vimeo as well as enabling creators. I think it can be beneficial to break away from the YouTube + Patreon model that exists now
Huh. That makes sense. That's actually kinda cool. I never really was into College Humor back in the day, but I've become a huge fan of Dropout. And Vimeo has always felt like a great youtube alternative. So I think I owe more credit to College Humor than I'd previously given them :)
I do subscribe to Dropout and I agree. Actually, the only thing that annoys me is that it won't auto-rotate on my phone when I fullscreen a landscape video while the phone is in portrain mode. Youtube does. (But Emby doesn't, which I also use). :)
And yes, breaking up monopolies is very valuable. I agree heartily with this point. Monopolies can be convenient, but also limited - way too much power in the hands of one company.
Same! There's probably only a handful of their videos that I watched and liked. But Game Changer convinced to get a Dropout sub last year. I've quickly come to love their content!
Everything I've read says Sam is trying to a good business for him, the employees, and the talent. I'm rooting for their continued success
It was their parent company Connected Ventures that built it.
Yup Dropout uses it. Having said that, it comes with a bunch of downsides and I feel like vimeo is not really in a hurry to address them. At least last time I looked into it. For example, on desktop, no way to permanently turn subtitles on and remember the preferences you set for them (background).
There is also a bunch of tracking going on, including a tiktok tracking pixel that when blocked will make the cookie banner pop up all the time.
It honestly isn't something I am holding against Dropout as they are simply using the platform. But, part of it I feel like should have been already fixed by Vimeo. Specifically the subtitle issue, I just looked it up and the conversation I had with their support was in 2023.
