Since this article feels written in the circumspect way articles about deaths are written when the authors have decided that their readers should not be allowed to read directly that it was a death from suicide, I'd point out that this article in fact is an example of a problem with that approach: given the article, I assumed it was a suicide, but other sources directly point out that he died in his sleep.

I didn't get any sense that it was a suicide from this article... Especially since it states right at the very beginning that his family said, "He passed in his sleep of natural causes." And it also mentioned that he had congenital heart disease, and suffered a heart attack a few years ago. So I personally feel like it was made pretty clear that another heart attack was the likely cause of his death, which is why I even included 'heart disease` in the topic tags.

I think they were saying that because suicide is so frequently obfuscated in obituaries when fewer specifics are given it sort of becomes an assumption even when other benign reasons are given. That doesn't mean they didn't also miss details in the article but I understand the impulse.

Fair enough. It's definitely true that most obituaries do tend to obfuscate details when it comes to suicides and ODs... but I don't think I've ever read an obituary like that where the person's family also lied by claiming it was natural causes. Almost all the cases where it was a suicide or an OD, the families usually just ask people to "respect our privacy" or something similar to that, instead of outright lying about the cause.

I have, but only because I knew the truth. It's the sort of thing that you don't usually find out, except maybe with celebrities or people you're close to. In this case, I suspect people also remember him as younger than he actually is, so it's probably part of it too.

Accidental drug overdose or other deaths from addiction is another common thing that is hidden from obituaries and that was the route I had wondered about initially myself. But also I remind myself I'm just not owed the cause of someone else's family member's death.
