So I wanted to bolster my "Canada" channel on my custom IPTV network setup to play more than Letterkenny and Trailer Park boys, so I went out looking for Canadian sitcoms, and MY GOD has the US missed out on a goldmine.
I just started watching Corner Gas, which I'd never heard of, and it's great, definitely a new comfort show. I also started watching North of North, which I had also never heard of, and THAT is great too.
For those that don't know, Corner Gas is a Canadian sitcom about a guy running a gas station in the middle of nowhere, Saskatchewan where absolutely nothing happens. The vibe is total deadpan, low-stakes comfort. I can definitely see where Letterkenny's origins come from.
And North of North is really cool and refreshing given it's an indigenous show centering around modern Inuk culture which is something I've never seen, so everything is interesting and I love the immersion into that culture. It's a newer comedy on Netflix that's set way up north in a small Arctic town in Nunavut. It’s about a young Inuk mom named Siaja who decides she's completely done with her marriage, dumps her husband in a very public, messy way, and tries to start her life over. The show is hilarious, a bit raunchy, bust also heartwarming. Because it’s written by Inuit creators, it gives you this awesome, genuine look at what everyday life is actually like in a modern Indigenous community up north. It's got a Parks & Rec or The Office vibe but indigenous.
