'Star Trek: Discovery' teaser for Season 2 released
From CBS: New details, trailer from "Star Trek: Discovery" Season 2
From Gizmodo: In The First Trailer For Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, The USS Enterprise Boldly Arrives
As someone outside the USA, the videos in those articles didn't work for me, but this one from Netflix UK & Ireland does work for me: Star Trek: Discovery | Season 2 Trailer [HD]
Pike being on the Enterprise with no Spock, the Federation having a ship that can literally jump anywhere in the universe... I see Discovery isn't keen on trying to retcon itself into canon any time soon.
This makes me sad, but the trailer itself looks good. I'm glad we're getting more of The Orville (if they can drop the crass humour) alongside Discovery.
I assume Pike is only commanding the Discovery temporarily, for the duration of whatever mystery or danger is signified by those red lights.
I also assume there'll be some technobabble explanation to eliminate the spore drive from further use.
Not only the spore drive, but all knowledge of the spore drive, mycelial network, mirror universe, etc... Ultimately that is what needs to happen at the end of the show, but with a Year-of-Hell reset too maybe?? It makes me frustrated they may end up doing something to render the whole show pointless.
The first half of Orville S1 was pretty rocky, but thought they pulled out of that first season funk with the last three episodes. I can see myself really liking that show, even if I have to forgive an occasional MacFarlane moment.
I felt the same, and that's why I'm hopeful. Early TNG and DS9 both suffered from rocky starts. It's obvious that The Orville has the heart that Discovery lacks, but without the name-brand recognition they had to fall back on pulling in Seth MacFarlane fans. As I mentioned elsewhere I honestly hope that the terrible jokes are studio additions because they really don't fit the tone of the rest of the show. Now it has some footing, maybe they can do away with them and let the show roll on its own merits.
I've been so curious what is happening with Discovery (No way I'm getting CBS All Access for just one show), but if you're comparing it to The Orville, I'm out. That show disappointed me in ways I didn't even expect were possible.
I'm in Europe, and we get Discovery on Netflix. I don't think it's worse buying a whole new service to see, but I am glad I watched it. If you have a friend with CBS, or you can binge it all in a trail period, it would be worth it :)
When I compared Discovery to The Orville I didn't mean for it to be because they are similar, more by the fact that both shows painfully miss the mark of their origins. Obviously, they both hail from Star Trek, while Discovery does so in title and world-building, The Orville does so in premise and theme.
Discovery, however, eschews much of the canon history in a similar that the Nu Trek/JJverse does, it is still a good show in and of itself. Many were hand-waving the absolute stupidity of the available technology far surpassing TOS while set earlier in the timeline, by saying something catastrophic could occur and we'd see we are in an alternate timeline or some such. It could still happen I guess...
The Orville takes the soul of what made good Trek and attempts to duplicate it, only barely succeeding. I hate the crass humour and honestly believe that Seth McFarlane was contractually obligated to put at least one fart/shit/sex joke in every episode because, especially later in the season, they are so out-of-place and jarring when they turn up. That coupled with the respect of Star Trek and actually decent original episodes (like About A Girl) gives me hope for further seasons, much like the first couple of seasons of TNG/DS9.
The two shows together comprise of all the different things I love about Star Trek, but neither one actually stands alone. The Discovery is well written and produced, but takes itself way too seriously, while ignoring much of an already-established universe. While The Orville is all the camp, comfort, and do-goodness while trying to pass itself off as a parody with terrible comedy.
Thank you for your detailed reply. Unfortunately you may have convinced me to keep avoiding Discovery when you mentioned JJ Abrams' movies. 😜
You've actually hit the nail on the head on why I don't like The Orville. If it were simply less "Trekish" I would enjoy it so much more, but the serious tone ruins all the jokes. And Seth McFarlane's style just works so much better in animation than he does in real life. The Orville is just far too constrained by it's concept.
Fair enough :)
The more I think about it, the more sense it makes to set Discovery after main Trek. The only thing that would need to change is the main antagonists for the first half can't be Klingons. But with their over-the-top redesign, both physical and cultural, they were Klingons in name only and could have easily been the Onklings without any other changes almost :)
It was always on Netflix... if you're not in the USA or Canada. If you're in the USA, it's only on CBS All Access. I'm not sure how it works in Canada.
