Honest question: how many people really have HBO?
I will admit that I have a very small social circle, but almost nobody I know has HBO. Yet they are constantly talked about in the media as if it was the biggest content creator on the planet. The first sentence of this article simply assumes I have HBO. It's really annoying.
Is it possible HBO have a higher percentage of being pirated? Maybe that's why you see discrepancy between your social circle and the media. It could just be HBO shows are talked about at the same rate as other comparable shows, but maybe a larger percentage of HBO shows are pirated.
I'll say the same thing to you that I tell everyone I know: you should definitely get HBO. Far fewer people (especially young people) have HBO than Netflix, which is a fucking travesty. HBO offers far superior content, which is why its programs are constantly mentioned in the press and are contending for/winning Emmys. Succession (which I'm actually rewatching right now) is the best show currently streaming or airing on TV, a title which HBO has held through most of the year despite a massively disappointing GOT season. You can take the best shows that have aired or will air on HBO in 2019 alone (Succession, Barry, Last Week Tonight, Game of Thrones, Euphoria, Silicon Valley, Big Little Lies, Chernobyl, Veep, The Deuce) and each show could arguably rank higher than any original content that Netflix has ever produced, or at least top-5. Not to mention, HBO offers a pretty decent selection of movies and has tons of other great shows available from its past. HBO Now is only a few dollars more than Netflix, so if you live in the US, or have a VPN that can put you in the US, get HBO.
Media critics are obviously going to be more likely to have subscriptions to this sort of thing.
HBO is also famously lax about not caring if people share login credentials.
