TV Tuesdays Free Talk
Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
The New Pope / The Young Pope S02 is KILLER. I love the overall aesthetic and cool that flows through every scene. If you're not watching, hop to it!
I finished Fosse/Verdon and I have to say, it should win every award you can throw at it. Williams and Rockwell have some truly unbelievable (well, very believable) performances. I've always loved Williams' work, but with this, it feels like she's really stretched up to another level.
I've tucked into Moonlighting -- and what a fun little series! I hear it goes down a little as Bruce Willis moves toward movie stardom, but we should get a few solid series out of it.
Curb is back and I'm not sure I've laughed so hard at a show for the longest time. I've always loved Curb, but sometimes it isn't as tight as it should be. This week's episode was one of the best.
Avenue 5 started and I hate Josh Gad. He's not too bad in this, but I just don't like him. The first episode has its moments, but I don't really see this series lasting long. It feels like a mix of the visual budget for the Orville with the writing of Other Space, but not as tight. I think they also should have aired two episodes to start, since the first is mostly establishing.
Also, not sure if anyone else missed it, but there was a Star Trek: Short Treks out on the 9th. Everybody in my TV club missed it. If you can't get your hands on it, it's not important to the overall story.
I've also added Servant to the queue. Rupert Grint is usually pretty good in everything he does and Nell Tiger Free was excellent in Too Old to Die Young. The premise looks great and some friends say that it all plays out nicely with plenty of surprises.
I watched the first episode of Avenue 5 too, and I'm not sold on it yet. I love Hugh Laurie and a few of the other people involved, and I really enjoyed the first few seasons of Veep, so I'm hopeful for it. The first episode leaned a little too heavily on some tired/stereotypical characters and writing though (like the "we were just about to break up but now we're stuck together!" couple), so I hope they're able to move away from that kind of stuff in the future episodes.
I probably won't keep watching it weekly, and just go back once the whole first season has been released.
Hugh Laurie is always good and HBO has a pretty good track record for comedies, but they're not totally stinker-free. I think waiting is a good plan.
On behalf of the internet, I am willing to give this series three episodes. I will endure Josh Gad, whom I hate, so others may not have to.
Josh Gad certainly is the worst part of the show. Thankfully he’s not the main focus or it would ruin the entire show.
Zach Woods is redeeming, though a little typecast from Silicon Valley. I can’t tell how I feel about Hugh Laurie at this point but I’ll save my judgment.
Overall the show was not as entertaining as I had hoped, due to much of what has already been mentioned, but then again I didn’t particularly think the last seasons of Silicon Valley were all that funny and I still watched all of then.
I dropped SV one season after T.J. Miller left. I'm not a big T.J. Miller fan, but he really balanced everything out. After he left, the series was basically Richard freaking out, Gilfoyle and Dinesh fighting, and Jared being Jared. Jian Yang was great, but way better when working against Erlich.
I watched the first episode of the last season and just couldn't do it. It's unfortunate because the first few seasons were so good.
Zach Woods is really funny, and I hope they put him to good use here. I like how snippy he is.
I binge-watched "The Boys" on Prime and all I can say is wow. It's such a dark show, and I mean dark, but it's interspersed with so many moments of banal humanity and even humor. What I found was interesting was that every character, even the cruelest, most savagely opportunistic ones, are characterized deeply and show how it's possible to sympathize with them somewhat. I kept looking for the person who was really pulling the strings and masterminding all the bad events which happened, but even though there were several twists, it becomes painfully clear that no one is exempt from blame, but everyone is also influenced by the actions of those around them, creating a perfect storm of corruption and violence. Especially considering the twist at the end of the season, it's one of the most impactful shows I've watched.
Can't wait for season 2!
I've watched the first 3 episodes of True Detective: Season 2 and, so far, I'm enjoying it more than Season 1. It feels more grounded and I'm a sucker for stories about webs of corruption more-so than fantastical elements of a murderous cult.
At the time, people were expecting more of Season 1 and felt really let down. After giving it some time, I rewatched S02 and really liked it as a standalone.
Season 3 is also stellar. I hope they keep the series going.
I'm currently watching the Jeopardy Greatest of All Time tournament. What a skill level!
I don't often watch Jeopardy, but I enjoyed watching a few games here and there. But then I started watching James' winning streak which utterly ruined regular jeopardy for me. "Pro" leagues are where it's at.
Edit: The wagers on Game 3 Match 1 are awesome!
Has anyone watched the second season of Sex Education on Netflix? I found the first season to be moderately enjoyable, but didn’t want to waste my time if the second wasn’t any good
I got burnt out studying all day for the second day in a row and decided to watch Kipo on Neflix. It was so good I ended up watching all of it. It has a lot of the niche things I really enjoy, and it seems like it's the culmination of Dreamworks Television Animation's experience. The animation can simply be captivating at times. I also really love the setting and the character design, and the characters are surprisingly easy to enjoy in spite of them actually being fairly flat (though they gain depth as the show continues). I know it probably will annoy many, but I like how the plot is often moved forward completely by surprise, either by the main characters falling down a hole somewhere or a giant beast literally poking it's head down where they are gathered. But more than anything, I really like the music choices; the soundtrack is eclectic but always fits the mood; most songs have vocals but they don't get in the way, and the songs that are sung by the characters are all fairly catchy and are pretty good quality. Overall, the show is captivating and imaginative, and it seems clear that there's a lot of love put into it.
