Last month I finally got around to catching up on a bunch of shows that I had been falling behind on, and even managed to start digging in to a few new ones as well. In no particular order:
Altered Carbon - Season 2 - The new season was great. Anthony Mackie was fantastic as Takeshi, and I didn't think I could love Poe any more, but this season proved me wrong. Poe's story arch was amazing, and I dig his new companion as well.
Jack Ryan - Season 2 - The new season was rather mediocre, IMO. But given how amazing the first season was, I am not really surprised that is the case, especially since there is no way they could continue having the stakes and tension be as high as they were in the first season.
Better Call Saul - Season 4 - This show just keeps getting better and better IMO. It's supremely understated and nowhere near as tense as Breaking Bad, but I think that where it really shines is in the characters, all of whom are deeply flawed in really interest ways. The acting is absolutely top notch, too.
The Boys - I love Watchmen and superhero shows in general, so this was right up my alley. It felt a lot like Heroes to me (in a good way), but with an even darker twist and more social commentary. I'm really digging it and can't wait for season 2 (especially so I can see how the cliffhanger resolves itself)!
Rick & Morty - Season 4 - Solid as usual, but way way too short and taking way too long. WTF is Dan Harmon and Adult Swim doing? I would rather have them take their time and continue to produce solid seasons than have the show go downhill... but it's getting kind of ridiculous at this point, IMO.
The Witcher - I was actually really surprised by this show. I love the video games, but based on the trailers I thought this would be super melodramatic and cheesy/hammy, but it was actually really solid. Cavill is decent enough as Geralt, and the rest of the casting seems good enough as well... though I'm not quite sure about the choice for Triss though. The only part that made me cringe was the very end. Those who have watched the show probably know what I mean. Even within this dark fantasy setting with "fate" and all that jazz involved, it made absolutely no fucking sense they would immediately hug it out like they did, IMO. :P
Edit: Oh, I also started watching Happy!, and while it started off really strong and felt promising, it unfortunately quickly lost all its steam and devolved into pure cringe. I only made it halfway through episode three before giving up.
I actually liked the new season of Jack Ryan better than the first. I felt like the first went to far and to dramatic to fast (for the sake of hooking people in) and this season dialed things back to normalcy. Plus the latin American setting is very fitting to Tom Clancy.
That's fair, and very true about the setting being much more Clancy-like. I think a big factor for me being so disappointed in the second seasons was that I watched both seasons almost back to back, so the contrast between them was that much more drastic seeming to me. If I had taken some time between, or if they had switched season 1 and 2, I probably would have appreciated the Venezuelan season more.
Checked out Devs last night. It has an interesting dark and enigmatic vibe, very reminiscent of Ex Machina, which makes sense given the fact that the writer is the same. Curious to see where it goes after these two episodes. The fact that it’s a mini-series gives me hope it will actually have an ending that gives closure.
Better Call Saul delivers, as always, with the latest of Season 4. I’m excited to see its entry point into Breaking Bad, which feels like it’s coming up soon. Saul is in full swing now and it’s sad to see him completely give up his morals, but it’s also so much fun to see him scheme.
High Maintenance has had some great episodes this season. Their latest was one of the first times I got stressed while watching it, though. It showed some moments of awkward confrontation, which is not typical for the show. That being said, after hearing their panel at the 92nd St. Y gave me a better appreciation for what they are going for with trying to capture authentic moments from life.
Haven’t seen it yet, but looking forward to the second season of Cosmos kicking off. While I preferred the Sagan series better than the first season of the reboot, I enjoyed both.
re: High Maintenance they've really nailed the balance between the guy and the other stories. Such a nice little treasure of a series.
