I started watchmen yesterday, I am really liking it so far. Also its the first time I am hearing about Tulsa massacre, I was fascinated, so I did some research and found out most of the Americans didn't know about this. Is it really not on the history texts? or were the teachers uncomfortable talking about it?

Growing up in a mostly white suburb in the Midwest (so not in the South where a lot of these things happened), and even there, our schools barely touched on any of it. We were taught that slavery existed and was the cause of the civil war. We were taught that there were civil rights struggles in the 1960s related to race. They talked about Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, and that's about it. I started elementary school in the 70s, but was pretty young when Roots aired. I imagine the older kids probably spent a class discussing it.

And don't get me started on how little they taught us about what we did to Native Americans. I mean they did tell us about the Trail of Tears, but it all seemed so abstract and so long ago that we really didn't get any of the significance of it all.

So yeah, I didn't learn about Tulsa until I was in my 40s.

I am from India south India specifically, Once a famous social reformer called Swami Vivekananda called the state I am from "Lunatic Asylum". He was referring to the horrible state of casteism that existed in the state at the time. From that, the state have gone through multiple reformation movements and eventually become one of the better state in terms of equality and multiple other guages.

But, when my parents were in school they were taught that these reformations were started by upper cast people and was an aftereffect of they letting the lowercast people to have education. And lot of people from my parents age still believe this.

Fortunately, nowadays that's not the case, we were taught about the women who choped of her breast as a protest against breast tax and Ayyankali, who fought for education of lower cast kids, etc.. Not the upper cast people who eventually had to comply.

There are lot of misunderstood history in India still, some curriculum's trying to blame even casteism on Britain. But things are changing now and that gives me hope. :)

I will checkout the comic, thanks :)

I'm now about 7 or 8 episodes into Mythic Quest and am finding it really funny. I highly recommend it. Watched the first episode of Dear White People. Looks interesting.

Mythic Quest is great, and then they drop the meta back story episode, and I want more of that because it's amazing, but we're never getting more of that.

Sorry, I meant we're not getting more of the story from the "A Quiet Death" (ep 5) timeline. That episode was outstanding.

      Isn’t this show super preachy?

I've watched a few episodes now, and I think it satirizes the politics of college pretty well. So yes, preachy, but intentionally so for comedic effect, I would say.

If you're familiar with Perry Mason, this is along the same vein, but grittier.

Two episodes in and we've got a good pace. They're also pulling some interesting influences for characters, like Aimee Semple McPherson for the character of Sister Aimee (Tatiana Maslany.)

This is pretty much how remakes should be. Definitely grittier than the old one... a lot of cussin' that fits perfectly.

Read a guy on IMDB complaining they made Perry Mason into a lowlife. I know nothing about this IP, but I found it interesting that someone hated the show precisely for the reasons you seem to like it.

Traditionally he's sort of like Jimmy McGill (Saul Goodman) in that he's not really respected by his peers, but he's a talented lawyer. Jimmy is sketchier, but Perry Mason is pretty much a great detective who is a lawyer on the side. He loves impossible cases that any sane lawyer wouldn't touch.

So to say that he's a low-life... I can agree with that, but it's an asset. The Perry Mason we saw in the original series was cleaner, but that speaks more to the media of the times.

The nice thing about this version of Perry Mason is that they've gone back to the pulpy roots a little more than the TV series ever did.

I’m still watching a lot of Deep Space Nine, but also a few episodes of Travelers—not a super great show, but good enough, great cast and a theme that I love: time travel.

Travelers is genuinely one of my favourite shows. I'm also a sucker for time travel plots, though I sometimes end up frustrated when the internal logic starts to falter. Travelers managed to always stay consistent with its own rules I felt. Timeless was also enjoyable, but more on a cheesy fun level.

The “being a regular human” part of the episodes is usually boring. But the characters are pretty good, as well as the acting and premises.

It’s funny how no one ever gets that they’re part of some kind of conspiracy—it’s like they have invisible Clark Kent glasses.

I’m actually watching it right now.
