It looks like they did a good job on casting and everything, so I'm still expecting it to be really good, and I can't wait to see it.

The wheel of time series is soooooooo long. I am curious to see if they manage to do the whole thing or if they'll shut it down early. The length of the series and that a few of the middle books (don't even remember which ones) are not that great and don't significantly move the plot forward is the main reason I can't recommend anyone to pick up the series. It is just too much to get through! That said, I will definitely watch this show and hope they do a good job of telling the story! Also Brandon Sanderson do deserve a lot of credit for wrapping up the series after Robert Jordan passed. That can not have been an easy task!

I tend to think "the slog" in the middle books is a bit overstated by fans of the series if you're reading straight through the series and not waiting for new books to come out. There's really only one book (I'm looking at you, Winter's Heart) that seriously drags. I do admit that there are probably a few too many plotlines in some of the middle books, but I've never found most of the books that bad on a readthrough, and the highpoints are fantastic. I will say that I'm a very fast reader when it comes to fiction though, so ymmv.

I am feeling pretty optimistic about the show. They are planning on covering most of the first book in the first season, along with some material from the second and third books. The showrunner has said that he has a roadmap for covering the whole series in 8 seasons, which seems like a pretty brisk pace for covering 14 books, although they'll be able to cut a lot of the descriptions of dresses probably. X'D

A fast perspective from reading is more like what you get when it's trimmed down to fit TV so fingers crossed. that should help out the costume department haha

You might be right. I think I read the first book back in 96/97 and read through the first few released ones fairly quickly. Then as you catch up to the author there is more of a gap between reading which leads me to be not as invested in the story (since I forget a bunch of it between reading the books). Maybe I should try them again...

As an alternative perspective, I started reading them around 2008 (I think?) with no foreknowledge of the mid-series "slog", and I still ground to a halt while reading A Crown of Swords.

I managed to get through A Crown of Swords, reading it off-and-on over the course of a year (reading other books in the gaps), then took a year long break, read The Path of Daggers, took another year long break, read Winter's Heart, and by then had forgotten too much of the plot to understand what was happening in Crossroads of Twilight (generally considered the most difficult novel in the series).

So the slog was very much real for me, haha, even though I didn't have to wait for any books to be released.

I loved the first few and would really like to finish the series but I've forgotten so much that I suspect I'd have to start all over again... and 14 books is so daunting, even if things pick up again around Knife of Dreams.

Someone once recommended to me that anyone who loves the first few books but is struggling through the mid-series might honestly be best served by just reading the extensive chapter summaries online for any chapters they can't bring themselves to finish. Apparently that helps accelerate the pace for some of the middle chapters in the slowest books.

I was appalled by the idea when I was younger, but now that I'm older and have less free-time to read, I'm tempted try it if it means I can get back into the series... (although I hear that some of those chapter summaries may contain spoilers for future events in the series? Anyone who plans to try it should verify that they're spoiler-free beforehand).

I read them for the very first time right around when Jordan passed away and Sanderson had been named to finished but hadn't completed it yet. So I started reading them at night before bed and managed about a book per month and by the time I caught up the release date for the final 3 was established so I didn't have to wait too long.

I've only read them the one time, but I'm inclined to go read them again. I read them before knowing that "the slog" in the middle was a Known Thing, so I didn't really notice it. In hindsight, the middle books definitely suffer from a pacing problem due to too many plots. I can appreciate what Jordan was trying to do, in setting up all of these many pieces to try and create a grand sense of world-shifting events happening. I don't even necessarily think it's bad, it's just a departure from the pacing of the other books and since you as the reader aren't expecting the pacing or tone change it feels like a thing you just have to endure instead of enjoy.

Yeah it's still quite a lot of books to get through, but for the most part they move at a pretty good clip. There is maybe 1 book that is actually a little difficult to get through for me on a reread, but knowing that things are going to pick up again makes it easier. But that's for me, I've known of plenty of people with what I consider to be very good taste that bounce off them.

Well this is unrecognisable :/ I didn't have high expectations based on earlier info they released, but it looks worse than I thought. The events shown, the visual style, the cast... The whole vibe is just wildly wrong. It's like live action Airbender or something.
