I feel like I’ve moved towards “Love, Death, and Robots” for the more tech-dysphoria content. BM just doesn’t scratch the same itch anymore, and it’s a sad thing to see. New season is still decent, just not the same “You have to watch this” vibe that I had towards the initial seasons.

I feel like you’re touching on the differences between a walled, and open garden. When you can control the garden, plants that you enjoy can flourish, whereas an “open” garden is dominated by the most successful plants. Sadly, I think the most successful plants is akin to controversy on social media, it’s what ends up dominating. If you want to point to a human condition to explain the appeal, that’s a separate argument, but I can see it being made.

Perhaps that is what is being held sacred here: ideas, standing on their own.

When this is combined with a strong policing of tone, and content, you end up with an echo chamber. It’s cliche, but the adage “who watches the watchers” fits well here. I don’t think this is a bad thing, but it does open the idea to “what ideas do we allow to be held sacred here?”.

To clarify, I don’t mean the inherently inflammatory ideas, but the more mundane distinctions between the idea of a collective vs. an individual, or capital and labor, etc.

I resonate with this so much, but I wanted to add that I’ve been on a continual search for that religious euphoria. Yet, I never went to church. Instead, the first moment that lit my brain in a similar way was standing packed like a sardine, belting my heart out to Say Anything circa 2010.

Since then I’ve found that “pattern” in other concerts, protests, and rallies. I’ve come to view it now as The Euphoria of the Collective but it’s still an elusive feeling.

This is something that I’ve found both useful, and extremely destructive. It all depends on when I’ve used the tactic. Funnily enough, the useful moments have been offline while the destructive moments online. I think the tool is fine, it’s the medium that isn’t a fit. Having a space where responses can happen in real time is essential to avoid the “tit for tat” that an argument becomes.

I think your advice is best; Breathe, and separate this space from others.
