I will fight for Nightmare Alley, mostly because I have a soft spot for movies that take their time. A Vision in Darkness and Light (the black & white version) drastically enhances the lighting choices throughout the film, and is a must-watch in my opinion. It's a damn shame the movie was eaten alive opening against Spider-Man: No Way Home--a casualty of the pandemic that I hope gets rediscovered as time goes on.

I would like to see his take on it, but I don't have much faith in a sanitized comedic version. Disney's absolute refusal to take risks is something I could rant about for hours. Guillermo's video game venture, P.T. was shelved in a similar fashion, and I still wonder what could have been. Also, still waiting for Hellboy 3. You'd think winning an Oscar for best picture and best director would give you a blank check to do whatever you damn well please.

Ariel singing underwater is easy to overlook in animation--you put it out of your mind and give it pass. Seeing it in live-action... it is so jarring to not have air bubbles or some kind of distortion in the vocals. Having it sound like a concert hall in an underwater environment just doesn't match what I'm seeing.

I'm not the target audience for this, but a Melissa McCarthy Ursula might be worth catching. It would be easier to throw money at a Guillermo del Toro adaptation of the original Hans Christian Andersen story. Disney's aversion to darkness and melancholy has produced a number of ear-worms over the decades, but even children crave some substance in the story being presented. /rant +1 casting

I imagine that would handle The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, and there's a number of ways to get it running on Linux. Easy to throw 100+ hours into it if you can overlook the dated graphics.

The anime is the most faithful reproduction of the book I have encountered, but it only covers the 2nd half of the story. You are dropped into Albert's perspective in Rome, and the Count is already firmly established from the get-go. Staying in Albert's perspective, the Count looms over everything, and you get to experience the revenge plot from the other point-of-view. It has a "love it or hate it" ending, but goes for it with an original take that hasn't been replicated 100 times. A slow-burn in the beginning, but impossible to put down once everything starts falling apart in grand fashion. 10/10, hope you dig it.

I'm a big fan of the 2002 movie, but it's missing so many pivotal sections of the book. The total absence of Caderousse, Franz d'Épinay, Haydée, and Maximilian changes the story so much. Gankutsuou is an anime adaptation that followed very closely to the book, despite making the Count a space vampire. There are dozens of film adaptations, and most of them add what your mentioned in your other post--Mercedes and Edmond reconcile, an epic duel settles things in the end, a long lost son is revealed... happily ever after.

    SPOILERS

The stay of execution in Rome, Noirtier de Villefort having a Phoenix Wright moment with eye movements, Caderousse and the diamond, the entire tragedy of the Villefort family, the end of Fernand Mondego subverting the hell out of expectations with a suicide, Danglars paying about a fortune for a bite of food (and surviving). Hell, the Count being a master of disguise by assuming 8-9 different personas. It would be fantastic to find a movie or series that covers every bit of it--a multi-season Netflix series? It's my favorite book, and I desperately want to see Edmond's realization upon discovering the Villefort child on the screen.

It seems like such an obvious gold mine, but every single version I have seen cuts most, if not all, of what I mentioned above. It touches a nerve and I could go on for hours about it.

And now . . . farewell kindness, humanity, and gratitude! Farewell to all the feelings which expand the heart! I have been Heaven’s substitute to recompense the good— now the God of Vengeance yields to me his power to punish the wicked!

Line of the book--right after the resolution of Pierre Morrel's debts and the return of the Pharaon. How do you film an entire movie and not let someone chew the scene with that line? Madness!

Edit: a fair review of the anime for the curious.

Just finished up Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, and find myself arguing with points nowadays as opposed to accepting them as whole-cloth. Next up is The Count of Monte Cristo--I've gone through the audiobook six times, but never read the physical unabridged version before. I'll be recovering from surgery over the next two weeks and have a ridiculous amount of time to burn.

Let's say, for argument sake, that the last human dies in 2050 due to... whatever. Climate change seems a good candidate to knock out the whole enterprise. Something to be "valued highly and preserved" becomes absolutely meaningless, and anyone shooting for immortality comes off as extremely neurotic, at the very least. How many humans from 30,000 years ago do we tell stories about?

I was rather excited by the trailer, and wanted to jump in with a counterpoint. I didn't think the trailer cuts reflected the editing of the film overall, the tone seemed very consistent (to me), emotion registered as "expect anger in the beginning--begrudging understanding before the credits," and the pacing, on first impression, implies a slow-burn that will take its damn time, thank you very much.

The cast is stacked, and the subject matter hits close to home (for me). If the movie is trying to break people out of racism--I'm all for it. Seeing an episode of Star Trek as a teenager, Far Beyond the Stars, is probably the very thing that prevented me from going down that path. It speaks to the whole reason this stuff exists in the first place--to have an influence on the trajectory of our future (or acquiring loads of money if you're the cynical type). The scene lighting seemed top-notch, and I don't think this was an easy paycheck for anyone that signed up.

I have seen maybe 85% of the cinematographers list you linked, but less than 5% of the limited series list. A glaring number of things to catch up on... I have no idea why I'm so oblivious to the category.

I'm going to give Utopia a chance based on the overall praise surrounding the visuals. It helps that it won't take long to watch from start to finish. Succession and The Good Wife are on the maybe list unless they grab me in the first few episodes (7 seasons is a commitment). I re-watched The Sopranos twice over the pandemic, and that's exactly the sort of "lightning in a bottle" I'm searching for right now.

What show, current or cancelled, do you think has the best cinematography? I haven't jumped into anything new since Better Call Saul ended, but I'm looking for another "every frame a painting" masterclass. Story doesn't matter, reviews are no concern--what made you say "Damn, that was well-shot" out loud?

I have experienced some schadenfreude while keeping up with the Alex Jones situation, but would feel more optimistic if the dark money pipeline was exposed and dismantled. You can de-platform Jones, remove the Infowars brand, shut down the LLC, etc. He's going to be right back in the game after a few anonymous donations. Throwing $50 million at someone like Jones to destabilize a country is more cost effective than a single F-16 fighter jet at roughly the same price.
