Comment on The Browser Company announces Arc Browser will no longer be their flagship product in ~tech

TBH I found their whole proposition kind of weird.
“Sign up to some random company to use a browser that’s just…another chrome clone, but now with vertical tabs and more AI”?? Like…why? -

Also, in the hacker-news comments, the Marginalia dev piped up to say they felt it got lucky with the search terms, and wasn’t amazingly representative. On the whole I think this test isn’t very designed or executed TBH, especially given the comments here + HN.

They’re more vibrant, easier to control on the model, have better transparency and opaqueness properties, more “efficient”, and generally so much more fun to paint with!
I’ve been using the Dahler-Rowney inks, which have a massive range, been particularly enjoying the pearlescent ones, they blend really well to create some fantastic colours on the models. Pair them with the cheap little battery-powered airbrush I got from Amazon for cheap, and I’ve been having a blast.
Goto tools:
- trusty hobby scalpel
- a 4-sided foam-backed nail-file thing I got from the chemist at the recommendation of one of the mini-painting YouTube channels, turned out to be one of the absolute best things for removing mould lines and glue overspill.
- a handy collection of minuscule brushes: 3/0 and such.
Disappointed:
Some of the medium additives have been pretty lacklustre. The high-shine additive wasn’t as shiny as I hoped, and the slow-drying medium turned out to mostly just be goop, which completely changes the texture and behaviour of the ink, which in turns affects how it applies to the model, which I’m not a fan of. I really like wet-blending and slower-drying mediums (more time to fix your mistakes), so I might have to hunt around for some different products on this front. I also have a satin airbrush finis that I’ve yet to try; mostly because I haven’t finished any models to my liking yet…
Want to experiment with:
I got these really cool “panel liner” oil-paint “pens” that I’m looking forward to using, but they need to wait until I mostly-finish some of my Tau models, because I want the panel lining done for a very specific colour-scheme.

No such issue with Kagi- comprehensive results, quality equal or above DDG and google, the “specialisation” toggle is super handy, and the custom weighting functionality is absolutely worth the subscription price alone.

I’ve been massively into skiing recently, so if I got ✨money✨I’d finally line up some snow holidays in Japan, Whistler, South America, Switzerland.
The rest would go to charitable causes and lobbying and funding for environmental and social causes, because there’s more than enough work to be done on that front and enough barriers as-is.

They got too big too fast, and it's over.
I largely agree with the points made, but disagree with this point. Disagree-ish? I don’t think reconsidering their continuity will help at all, I think the lighting of the proverbial wick was that they rolled out tv shows and more movies after Avengers: Endgame with missing a single beat. There was no break, it was relentless and there was no “breathing room” to give Endgame space. We went straight into 3 tv series, most of which were inconsistent garbage, Loki was the exception, but they even managed to whiff that big-bad too. Add to that the fact that a lot of the marvel content had some pretty obvious subtexts about “sustaining the status quo” (which this video does a fantastic job of talking about: https://youtu.be/LpitmEnaYeU ) which become pretty grating after a while, endless teasers for more crossovers - which just tease more - and you have the perfect storm for audience exhaustion.

Some minor tuning of graphics, but it’s been pretty smooth sailing - everything is on high/ultra and it runs at a pretty stable 60 fps at 4K.
The dual worlds mechanic is really cool, the graphics/textures, level of detail is really impressive. Keen to see how this generation of games progresses if this is what we’re getting at the beginning.

Here’s the thing though, with our media landscape the way it is, they’re likely to loose the election anyway. May as well get something done in the interim, because you just know that the LNP wouldn’t waste any time in power.

My plan is to paint - in their entirety - a couple (at minimum, more if time and effort affords) of Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Age of Sigmar models I have that are currently languishing in states ranging from nearly done to basically unstarted.
For the purposes of goal setting, here’s the models:
-
Necron Canoptek stalker: cool spindly legged robot thing. The colour/aesthetic scheme I’m going for is a kind of deep-sea-cross-deep-space-nebulae green-silver-purple. Trying to evocative some Lovecraftian space vibes. The legs are maybe, 60% done? The vast majority of the body, shells and various supporting accoutrements, shading OSL lighting etc to go.
-
Pack of 3 Seraphon Aggradon riders, basically lizards riding larger lizards? The big lizards are being done in a 2-tone emerald green with a cream-white underbelly, and gold-and-blue jewellery. The little lizards are going to be done in a 2-tone cerulean-blue scheme with red scale highlights, and the same style jewellery. These models are significantly more involved than the walker, with more small pieces and details but should be fun to pain and practice lots of techniques on.

Whilst I can’t read the original article because it’s paywalled, I think there’s an interesting kernel that is being missed by many existing comments (at time of writing). I think people are getting hung up on the nature of Silicon Valley, and are missing the more interesting point. It’s not “how do we replicate a parasitic, VC-funded, user hostile horde of companies in Europe?”^1, it’s “how do we create an a cradle for innovation and attract talent to create things that lets Europe rival America/etc for power/influence”
I don’t think it’s out of the realm of feasibility, and it would be really interesting to contemplate what “us-tech-company-of-your-choice-but-done-EU-style” would look like.
