I'm glad the church is being investigated and I hope they turnover every rock.

Although Catholic officials and leaders have ceded that the Church failed in the past, some consider the recent criticism unfair for an institution that has invested many millions in child protection efforts.

What I've noticed with pro-lifers is that they don't care about personal freedoms nor rational arguments. A lot of them are religious so anything that won't conform to their religious ideals won't fly with them. Increase in safe sex education? Their answer would be no because you shouldn't be having sex outside of marriage and you shouldn't be using contraceptives because the only purpose of sex is to reproduce.

I see it as mostly a religious issue. It's the church and highly mobilized church groups that are pushing the pro life agenda. It's these church groups that sponsored and shared the fake abortion picture where it showed a fake abortion with a fake dead baby. It's these groups that are pressuring its members on how to vote. These groups are keeping their politicians in line.

Honestly I don't know if there is anything anyone can do about it. If you don't go to church in the south you are the strange one, you are the other. You aren't going to convince the preacher to change his mind and thus you aren't going to change the community's mind. I'm sure there is a lot of people who aren't religious that you could change their mind but in the end it's one group that is driving the issue and it is the church.

I haven't seen it yet but from what I've heard from heard from friends it is good. And what I read from online forums is disheartening. People hate it who haven't even watched it because they don't like the new sequels. They hate TLJ and won't give Solo a chance.

I think the real problem is people who grew up on star wars. When they watched Star Wars as children they put these movies on the highest pedestal. You can only watch a movie for the first time once and if that was more than a decade ago with the benefit of child like wonder and rose colored glasses your expectations will not be met.

The NY times has a better article:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/23/world/europe/sweden-rape-consent-sex.html

The new legislation is not without its critics. The Swedish Bar Association is against the change.

“We have been very critical because it’s not going to lead to more convictions,” Anne Ramberg, secretary general of the Swedish Bar Association said. “The new legislation has not lowered the burden of proof, since the prosecutor has to prove that a crime was committed and they have to prove intent.”

The biggest impact of the new Swedish law might be a change in the country’s mind-set about what constitutes rape, but it could also lead to more attackers being prosecuted, said Anna Blus, who monitors rape legislation in Europe for Amnesty International in London.

It is just a political statement, it has no teeth. It is aimed to move the public conversation forward.

I don't think that is good enough. You have a sizable portion of the American population that believes what Alex Jones says is true. They believe that Sean Hannity is a credible reporter even though he is an entertainer. You're going to get people that vote on their political agenda rather than the facts. You'd get fox "news" reporters with mixed credibility and you'd get CNN reporters with mixed credibility. You'd even have some PBS reporters who are the most neutral reporters on this planet with mixed scores because some people don't like their political agenda being challenged with the truth.

I'd be satisfied with academics and/or distinguished journalists to be the ones who set the bar. And if you want people to vote, sure it could be set up like the rotten tomatoes voting system. The approved raters would have their own overarching score while the people would have a separate one.

This doesn't make you anonymous, but at least it can prevent nosy people from knowing too much.

This is really important. People grow and become better when discussing topics, you shouldn't be judged by someone snooping through your profile looking for ammunition to win an argument. It should be by the merits of your current posts. If I look through my reddit account even 1 year ago I cringe at some of the comments I've made. Maybe it should show the last month's worth of stuff and it all gets archived anonymously like you've said in your post.

User karma should not be public either. I can make an argument for it tomorrow if needed or we can discus it on another thread.

It could be changed but we need a system to offer credibility of a person. Karma kind of does this because it is (relatively) hard to farm karma to bot and troll. We need a system to be able to identify bad actors. If there is full anonymity will this quickly divulge into a 4-chan-esque platform?

I've read a lot of articles with click-baity titles that talk about Tesla's Autopilot but none that I have read ever blame Tesla. They just lay out the facts that they know, then people extrapolate wildly. If this is going to ever be trustworthy it shouldn't be run by a person who has an agenda, to portray Tesla vehicles better.
