So, last night I undertook some surgery, and replaced the motherboard and processor in my old gaming rig with a slightly upgraded combo so that I can squeak in under the minimum specs for Star Citizen. After the bootup, windows started telling me that my copy was no longer licensed.

Now, I had used the free upgrade from win 7 Pro, and as such had a win 10 pro install for the last 3 years or so. All above board. Now, the system is telling me I only have a win 10 home license showing on the system, and that I need to install home to use it.

Why would this happen, and how can I get my win 10 pro license back in good standing on the new hardware? Again, only the motherboard and processor have changed...

First, I want to thank you for an incredibly informative and well thought out reply. You've given me more than enough info on how the game actually works to be able to make an informed decision, which is far more than I was able to glean from the official site. I think I'll probably give it a shot now just to see what's up with the suspension tuning options, even though I've always been more of an engine guy.

On the example of the Koenigsegg vs the beetle... I'm reminded of a couple of episodes of Top Gear that sort of pointed out the real world differences in this kind of David vs Goliath race. In one, Hammond was soundly beaten while driving a supercar by an Isuzu Trooper, and the three hosts were beaten every time they tried against home built (and state sponsored sometimes) hot rods at the Last Vegas drag strip in their Viper, Aston and LFA.

That's the dragon I'm chasing if I'm honest. In MCO, it was a regular thing to see someone join up and grind time trials until they could afford the most expensive combo in the game (a 1010 HP Corvette with a blown Hemi and four drag slicks for stupid levels of traction). Beating those guys in the 69 Roadrunner I built with balanced torque and hp curves and proper gear ratios for the power and the track was magical lol.

My summer car was fun, but Revhead beats it as far as closeness to MCO. As for Forza, I haven't gotten into 5, so I can't comment on it in particular, but what I've seen from most of the AAA games is a definite scale from crap components to best components as you progress through the game via unlocks etc.

MCO benefited from the inclusion of a program used by mechanics called Dyno 2000, which was an engine blueprinting app. It used a database of a few thousand known parts and allowed you to build and test any combination virtually before going out and spending money. EA just ported it into the game as is, so you got real world numbers on everything, and if you put the wrong camshaft in with a carb that couldn't keep up, the game reflected it.

If you're telling me that Forza gets that deep into engine builds, sprung vs unsprung weight, shock travel, spring tension, bla bla bla, then I might have to give it a look...

I have, but I haven't been able to get past the 32 bit limitation. Apparently (not an electrical engineering PhD...) the game calls for instructions that are no longer available, even through emulation on newer machines. I've tried a couple of different emulators but gave up after a few days of smacking my head against the monitor.

Again, I'm pretty confident I'll be able to run the original on the new XP box I'm building, but a modern interpretation is what I'm really after. Something that might promise updates, dlc, editors and so on 😁

I did! And it turns out that in order for those programs to work, one needs a purpose built Windows XP machine. A 32 bit one. Now, that said, I have found an old PC I hope to use to see if I can get the old game itself working again, but I am also interested to see if something with more modern graphics and physics, as well as a more modern part and car library exists. For anyone else out there that is looking, and has an old XP machine, the files you need (if you still have the original game disc) are available on the Internet archive, and they do work.

Set your Wayback machine to the early 2000s, and you'll find me in hog heaven, building and racing old muscle cars from a catalogue of real world parts that interacted as they would in real life. EA released this game as a racing MMO, but I spent most of my time treating it as a single player game, building my hot rods and racing against the computer.

In 2003, they pulled the plug. Since then, nothing has come close. There are mechanic simulators, but you don't get to drive the cars when you finish them. Then there are the racing games, but none of those have the.level of detail in the build and tuning portion that MCO did. In MCO, you needed to actually build your engine in a way that the parts would work well with each other in order to get the best performance. It wasn't simply an upgrade chain, as you could easily spend ten grand on parts and come out with a 200hp brick.

Most recently, my search has led me to a.game called Revhead from Australia. It scratches a LOT of the itch, but it's still missing a lot of the stuff I miss from MCO. You can build cars with parts and race.them, but the build still feels like a more money=more power equation instead of an exercise in research and testing to figure out the perfect recipe for my particular driving style.

Am I chasing a pipe dream in the hopes that there is a.modern equivalent for that old gem?

Something to keep in mind re: Henkels, is that there are two levels to their knives. The ones with the single 'man' logo are generally stamped steel, and of lower overall quality that the double 'man' ones. That said, the best way to find a good knife is to go into a shop and try them out for feel. House of Knives is a specialty store here in Canada that carries most of the good brands, and they have no problem letting you test drive them in store. If you have a local analogue, I'd suggest starting there and getting a feel for what you like.

I hear what you, and others with far more means than I are saying, and if I do find a manual grinder in my searches, I will for sure default to it over the machines currently in my stable.

That said, I will say that I am not as completely concerned with precision as some others in the hobby are, at least, not yet. The way I see it, if I can pull a good shot most of the time then I'll have a beverage that I can enjoy more often than not. I don't believe my capacity for anxiety would allow me to chase the perfect shot for long before it started to adversely affect other parts of my life, so I'll keep it at a dull roar.

Who knows? Maybe that 3D printed burr mount mentioned earlier will deliver a perfect grind!

I'm hoping I can answer a few of the points brought up in this thread by answering yours. At this point, I have been through several thrifted grinders, as thrifting is the only way I can afford to feed my hobby for the time being. A Cuisinart, a Presidents Choice (store brand in Canada) which is the exact same machine as the Cuisinart, and a capresso which shares the same flat burr as the other two. The Bodom is the first conical grinder I've been able to find over the two years I've been looking, and since I had been able to calibrate the other three to a degree, I figured there must be a way to get it to bend to my will. According to the first answer, there is!

On my budget, the Bodom was 6 bucks. My Breville cost me 20 and an afternoon with a few screwdrivers to get it going and hasn't failed me since. The only other piece I use is a blade grinder I got for like 3.50, in which 24 seconds of spin produces a close grind.

I also have a Starbucks barista express I can use (20 bucks), but it's the one with the pressure diaphragm, and I'd like to get the Bodom working with the Breville if I can 😁

That appears to be exactly what I was after. To date, I've gone through several different disc style grinders with little success, and the Bodum is my first of the conical variety. I will give that link a shot and see how much difference it makes. Thank you for an incredibly useful response!

I have a rather impressive collection of thrifted equipment I use for my morning latte. Each piece has required a little bit of investigative repair in order to get it working just right, but I've recently been stumped by my newest addition, a Bodum conical burr grinder.

My current espresso machine is a single boiler Breville with a standard portafilter (no diaphragm or valves in the portafilter, so the resistance needs to come from finely enough ground coffee.)

My question is this; is it possible to calibrate the Bodum grinder at all? It's finest setting is apparently not quite fine enough to provide the right resistance for the espresso maker, so I've needed to regrind my coffee with a blade grinder to get the right consistency.

    Cheers in advance!

I'm seeing a lot of US based sources here, and while they are all super relevant and so far, seem to be objective and trustworthy, I've found that using some of the publicly funded sources can be really good as well. I like to cross reference between PBS, CBC and BBC when I can, as a foreign perspective on a local issue can provide some much needed perspective.

Not nearly as bespoke or beautiful as many of the examples I'm sure will grace this post along with your examples OP, but this multicolor Bic has helped me outline my first, and now my second novel.

It's like being back in grade school for me, but without any of the horrible bits that shaped me into the ascerbic ass I've become. When I was writing or drawing with one of these, I was somewhere else. Somewhere far away from bullies, rules, parents, teachers. I was free to create anything. Now that I've gotten to a point in my life where I feel free to create again, and these have been the perfect tool.

A good post I never thought I'd have reason to contribute to, by the way. Thanks for this.

To the average Joe, pretty neat looking gaming rig.

To someone more seasoned, that case and cooler are life support systems for my i7 920. 24 gigs of Tri channel ram, 256 SSD, 512 platter and a 1tb WD usb platter external. The graphics are handled by a 960 for now. I got the machine the motherboard was first installed in when I was working for Nerdcorps, so if you're a fan of Slugterra or the League of Super Evil, or even Monster High, this rig probably had a hand in what you saw. Now it heats my room while I play No Man's Sky
