Comment on We gotta move the comment box from the bottom of the comments to the top. in ~tildes
HannibalAnthrope I'm not sure I would agree with using a basic ui function to "encourage" certain user behavior, unless it is something you expressly prohibit in the rules, or is just invalid data. As you...I'm not sure I would agree with using a basic ui function to "encourage" certain user behavior, unless it is something you expressly prohibit in the rules, or is just invalid data. As you mentioned, threads get long, they already are even with this small group. I understand you'd prefer people read every comment before posting to be sure they're not saying the same thing someone else did. But I think it's a bad trade, your subtle side effect and encouragement for inconveniencing the user. Especially if the user has already used Search to see if their question was already answered. Or if their comment really wouldn't ever be a duplicate (a witicism? sharing a personal experience? etc..) And I'll be honest, for me, I'm not going to read every comment posted in every topic and group I want to post in.
Just offering my $0.019 for what it's worth. -

I didn't see a "who" to go with "what" tho, is it really not taken? -

First part of mine refers to one of the two greatest military strategists in history (Alexander being the other) - this is just IM[!]HO of course - second half is my middle name (obviously not the one I was born with LOL).
Don't ask me why I got all serious when I decided on it.
PS: I was "unknown_error" on, I think StackExchange. That's about as witty as I got LOL It's also my Wifi network name, along with "network_error" for the 5g. -

I am wondering if it is planned to provide the user with methods to control the content they see, ie; filtering the topics in a group or comments in a topic based on various criteria including keywords.
I looked around to see if this has been asked, or if there was a roadmap document, but did not find anything. (this is no criticism, I do realize we are early in the dev cycle and I cannot image just one person being able to do all this!)I do hope so. No matter how high the quality of the topics/comments there will always be things a user may not want to see.

Comment on I've taken the leap from Reddit in ~talk

Kudos to you Kavalier - One is never too late and never too old to learn THAT, and I learned it the hard way too. Give yourself several points - I do (I mean figuratively, I'm not hacking the up-vote code LOL).
I'm thrilled to be here, and look forward to reading your thoughts in the future.
PS: Hope things have eased up for you mate. -
Comment on How did you come across Tildes? in ~talk
HannibalAnthrope I saw it mentioned on Slashdot, which is where I normally hang as I'm a code monkey :-) But I never post there because... well because Slashdot LOL I don't consider that a community I belong to. I...I saw it mentioned on Slashdot, which is where I normally hang as I'm a code monkey :-) But I never post there because... well because Slashdot LOL I don't consider that a community I belong to. I also saw Tildes mentioned on Reddit of course. I've only been on Reddit a couple of months, but I found that everything my friends said it was, it wasn't (anymore that is). As a software engineer and UI designer I was something less than impressed by Reddit (as I am with most sites on the internet). I had initially set about forking RES and testing out some of my ideas but it as painfully frustrating for me because there isn't much information about the code, absolutely zero commentation, and many things are just broken because of the new Reddit design. And there's a slight chance also that I've just plain become crotchety after 34yrs LOL
But despite being semi-retired (and crotchety LOL) I do intend to contribute if I can, lawd knows I have the time to give it a shot anyway!
Thrilled to be here - Greetings all! -

Comment on Daily Tildes discussion - why should we allow (or not allow) fluff content? in ~tildes.official

And only just this evening registered (so this is my first post!). I was very interested to read this thread, because this matter of "fluff" content with posts that required no thought and contain nothing of value other than perhaps a mild chuckle - was the last straw for me on Reddit after I realized that their dandy new version (with RES) didn't allow me to filter that garbage out. Only took me two months but I finally had enough. And I am very relieved to know this site is not going to be yet another Reddit clone! Finding Tildes and joining the group is quite honestly the most excited I've been about anything on the internet for a long while. THANK YOU - and I look forward to contributing!
And PS: +2 for the Solarized Themes!
I read the blog, announcement, the first message in my inbox, the mechanics, and I think that's it - but do you mean something else by documentation? I will certain read what's available, although it won't help in this case as you've answered my question - and thank you for the reply!
I like the vision for Tildes, and the desire for high-quality intelligent discourse.
For me the most valuable capability is being able to control - to some degree - what I see, or more accurately, what I spend my time reading or scrolling past.
I just read a thread discussing placement of the comment box being at the bottom of the page. And I won't lie it concerns me, because there was a post saying it was intentional and that the intent was to "encourage the user to read the posts and perhaps reply to one instead of posting a new top comment" (oops that should NOT be a quote, I am paraphrasing]. My personal view, for what it's worth, is that if it's not a gross violation of the rules, or just plain invalid data, that core functionality shouldn't be used to "encourage" users to behave the way the owner desires. I pointed out that there are a lot of reasons why reading every post isn't appropriate or necessary. But the underlying intent being hinted at certainly concerns me.
Being forced to accept content and waste more time dealing with either chaff or even just stuff I'm not interested in.... is why I spend very little time on social sites, and after just two months, have already signed off Reddit (as RES filterReddit is not working and doesn't appear to be a priority).
Not a big loss to the community LOL but having to work at finding something that interests me just isn't my thing.
I would certainly welcome the opportunity to share my ideas with the Tildes devs at some point if this bubbles up near the top. I do have some ideas in mind, although I'm not sure they are in-line with the vision of the site. I shall continue lurking with enthusiasm and watching the site evolve!
