I didn't see a "who" to go with "what" tho, is it really not taken?
Change that last bit of the URL ("HannibalAnthrope") to a username you're interested in checking out. If it comes up with a valid web page complete with posting history, it's taken. If it comes up with a "404 Not Found" error (like https://tildes.net/user/whodoesdid at the time I wrote this comment), it doesn't exist, so that means it's not taken.

I choose different usernames for each site, and also make new accounts every year or 2, so I've rarely really had a regular username. Now that I'm getting into some open source stuff, and sharing projects, I needed a name, so used one of those "find available domain names with X characters" sites to find a short .com, and the generator came up with this. It means nothing, but it was available, pronouncable, and I kinda like how it rolls off the tongue... So after 25 years of forums and web and tech, I finally have a stable nickname heh.
Sounds like a word from some sort of conlang from a fantasy universe. Lord of the Rings-esque. Maybe it means a knight. Or an emerald. Or both, like a family name. EDIT: typo

Reddit was the first place I developed a strong online presence (outside of Facebook). I created a generic user account for my initial forays there but, after a few weeks, I decided I wanted something a bit more distinctive. So I chose this name because it represents quite a few things which are, or have been, important in my life:
Isaac Asimov is my favourite writer in any genre, but I came to him via his science fiction. Science fiction is my favourite genre.
Asimov was, at one point, the President of the American Humanists Association, and I'm a humanist.
I aspire to Asimov's clarity of writing, and his ability to explain things.
'Flowers for Algernon' is my favourite story, in any genre, of any length.
I played the character of Algernon Moncrieff on stage. This represents my acting past.
Oscar Wilde, who wrote 'The Importance of Being Earnest' in which Algernon Moncrieff appears, is another favourite writer of mine (and he's gay like me).
With such an appropriate username, that represents so many facets of who I am, I've come to identify with it quite strongly. Since creating it for Reddit, I've used it whenever I've branched out to other websites: I am "Algernon Asimov" pretty much everywhere I go on the internet.
The only change I might make if I was doing things differently would be to include a Star Trek TNG reference (Science_Officer_Algernon_Asimov or Commander_Algernon_Asimov would work!) However, this is my internet name now, for better or worse. It even has name recognition! (https://tildes.net/~tildes/1bo/clicking_on_a_reply_should_mark_it_as_read#comment-b8z)

This is a name I came up with for all of my public facing things, especially related to schoolwork and programming. In the past I learned that names that are googlable are a bad idea, so I picked this, which literally just means "silver" as an adjective in German. The only things Google finds are some translation sites, a bleach wiki article (???) And a soundtrack from Pokemon Shuffle. It's distinctive yet anonymous, and that's how I'm planning to roll as much as I can with all future usernames.

I was pretty interested in cryptography and physics when I was in high school, back in the glory days of Applied Cryptography and A Brief History of Time. So "dice" is sort of a reference both to RNGs and Einstein's famously incorrect statement about God and the nature of the universe.

I like to have a unique username without underscores or numbers. In this case it was very easy because of how young the site is. I took my name from cirrus clouds, because I like looking up at the sky. It seemed easy to spell and pronounce, and also has some connections with aviation.

Anyway, this name has evolved throughout my life. My name's Vinny, and in 5th grade, some kid called me "Vineyard Lombrowski" for no particular reason and I found it funny, so I used it online for a bit. I thought it was a little long, so I shortened it to just "The Vineyard", which I later shortened again to just "Vine". A few years later, an app of a ahem somewhat similar name came out, and any time I did anything someone brought it up, My favorite color at the time was purple and I liked grapes. Grapevine.
I experimented with "Lowbrow" for a little bit (stems from the original 5th grade nickname and still connects to the theme of my modern name, it being generally used to describe uncultured people while grapes and grape-related products (namely wine) are generally seen as the opposite, thought it was a nice fit) but quickly came back to this name, as anyone I've met online knows me by some variation of Vine.
I always thought this story was funny, your mileage may vary.
Cool little story you have! I have something similar with my main account names and the password. But I don't use them anywhere now except on my computer.

But why this username in particular? I like green and I've always been somewhat fascinated by knights, and the name "emerald knight" has a nice ring to it (I think so, anyway). It's really not any more complicated than that.

Plate armor or gtfo. But seriously, there's a certain allure to some nice plate armor and a good longsword. Your thought of the emerald baron is an interesting one!

I never found my old usernames very meaningful, so I was excited to think through a new username here. I like mountains, so I first considered Sierra, but that's generally a female name. I looked through a few lists of mountaineering and skiing terms and found verglas, which is french for a clear sheet of ice that forms naturally over an object. Could be over rock, tree branches, or something else. I googled it, some beautiful pictures came up of things I've seen after snowstorms, and since it's easy enough to say (even though it's pronounced vergla in French) I decided to go with it!

My friends and I discovered the joys of spoonerisms a few years back, to the point that one of us answers to the spoonerized version of history name. One night, we were playing EDH (a Magic format) and my one buddy's general was Azusa, Lost but Seeking. I thought that was the best spoonerism fodder we'd found since Chuckie Finster and adopted it as a username shortly thereafter

Hung out with a friend of a friend once, and he noted that I shared a name with Captain Levi from Attack On Titan (Which was still huge at the time). In the subbed anime, I guess he was addressed as "Heichou", which is, to my understanding, an outdated honorific for Captain. So instead of calling me Levi, he just called me Heichou. I never had a nickname previously so this was pretty neat and it's been a lot of my usernames for a while now. I'm super glad I joined up early because I usually can't do just "Heichou"

When I first made a reddit account I wanted asdf as my username but it wasn't available so I went with asdf1617. So when I made my tildes account I wanted to take asdf but I instinctively types in asdf1617 because I've gotten so used typing that. I only realized the next day so now I'm stuck with it.
Edit: deimos came through and my username is now asdf.
I know it is, I meant to take it. But when I was signing up for tildes I instinctively typed in asdf1617 since I'm so used to logging in to reddit with that username.

Hook is my primary nick name, even some people from school and most hackers I know call me that. I actually turn around if I hear it on the street.
How it came about … Well, in high school we had a Linux box ran by the students and you needed a username for the login (max. 8 characters). At that time (late 90’s) I was very much into the real history of pirates and how their society worked (they had a type of social security, pensions, even for widows, democracy …). So I learned that both cpt. Silver and cpt. Hook were real and quite fascinating, I took it as mine (my fall-back nickname is usually silver_hook).
Later, hook turned out to be quite a fitting choice for different reasons. If you know me, it seems to fit me well, even though not in the same sense as the name-bearer I took it from ;)

My nickname has been through several iterations. As a kid, I dreamt up an online name for myself that ended in -blue. That got boring, so I changed it to -red. Then it needed to be 1337, and it changed to -r3d. That username is taken most often, so r5d it is. Coincidentally, R is the first letter of my real name and D is the last, with 5 letters in between. So it fits.

Normally I'm jackson1442 (see literally anything on the internet) but I decided to change it up a little. Yes, I know being invited is a privilege and all, but I thought it would be really cool to just be 'jackson' for once, especially with all the other Jacksons in the world now, where I always have to be on my toes for someone else to have the same name.

I like one word names with no numbers or symbols. While meristele does have a modern scientific meaning, I am using an archaic meaning documented from the 17th century in the unabridged OED. It's an archeological term for a two headed stele.
I suppose you could consider it a marker for many life changes that were going on at the time. :)

I did the same thing for this username on reddit. It was originally going to be a novelty where I would respond to all of those PM_ME_X users and I would just drop a comment with whatever their name requested. But I got bored of that after like two times, and then I nuked my old main account and just started using this one full time.

It's part of my overall philosophy on life and such. It's not that I'm passive or simply a lurker.
It's more that I think we confuse our conscious experience and pretend it's the entirety of our experience. I'm just an emergent property of my brain. A passenger.
If I can add value to myself, it's in helping my brain better serve me, my family, my community. It's an odd thought, but it's worked for me. In the end, happy or not, I get to own all the results of my brain, even if "I" disagree with them.

This has my go-to online username since about 2014.
Origin: I wanted a manly but also unique semi-permanent username, so, being about 15 at that time, I modified 'draco', which means 'dragon'(well, more like serpent) in Latin, and there you have it - drakinosh.

I've been using this name for a while. I was happy to get it without having to add numbers to the end. It's a combination of the Greek "para-" meaning abnormal, and "doxa" meaning opinion. Then there is the obvious connotation with "paradox" which of course means "self-contradictory statement", to sort of poke fun at myself, yet "paradox" itself comes from "para-orthodox" which takes us back to the original meaning.
This phrase randomly came up in a conversation with my boyfriend. I'm also trying use a different username that isn't so obviously connected to me that people in real life can find me.

I was looking at a plate of biscuits at Bob Evans, and my fantasy baseball team is the Montgomery Biscuits because I got drafted to that team in Road to the Show in the Show '14.

This username started as a nickname I got from a guy who I played football with as a kid, and it's stuck as my username for almost everything online since. No point in breaking the trend here.

I wanted a name for a dwarven character in an RPG years ago so came up with something that sounded appropriate to me, been using it most places since then as it's usually not taken.

Came up with this username on other domains on an impulse(heh). I really like the concept of a paradigm shift, and was taking a physics course at the time and really liked what I came up with.

Well, way back in the 90s, I was a user of America Online (shut up, it was BIG back then!) In AOL, I was a frequenter of freeform roleplaying rooms, most notably the Red Dragon Inn. The RDI was essentially a multiversal pitcher plant... people from everywhere wound up there, and such was the case for my Selunite priestess from Iriaebor... Kindra Thrabalen.

It's just a shortening of the username I've had since 1st grade. Picked the first word that popped into my head and my favorite number repeated twice (because 0 times and once were both taken), and I've used it more or less for everything ever since. Recently I've started shortening it to just Diff when I can get away with it.

When I was in elementary school, Poptropica was pretty popular, and I really liked that game. I think my name for my first account was something like 'mumbo1553'. So, in Poptropica, when you first create your account, you get a few starting credits to buy cosmetics with. I spent all those and thought I wasn't able to get anymore, so I made another account, 'wumbo4886'. Then I did the same thing again. This time it was 'lumbo7332'. When I created that one I realized getting more credits was possible, so I felt kind of stupid. Then I just stuck with that name and I've used it for everything else since because I think it's funny.

Back when I was a wee lad I played world of warcraft and before any of the expansions I was in a guild called Random Acts (of Kindness). At some point I wanted to make a mage and as a joke I named it after the guild as joke. The name stayed and I am now the namesake of the guild of sorts. Keeping the name alive.... Although I'm not the only one on the internet name uses this name but either way I have used this name for a bunch of stuff since but it is still a 50:50 shot if you google and search to get me or the other person that uses my name. Well I was able to beat the other person to holding onto the name this time.

MyTildesAccount <GolfClap><GolfClap>!!!
First part of mine refers to one of the two greatest military strategists in history (Alexander being the other) - this is just IM[!]HO of course - second half is my middle name (obviously not the one I was born with LOL).
Don't ask me why I got all serious when I decided on it.
PS: I was "unknown_error" on, I think StackExchange. That's about as witty as I got LOL It's also my Wifi network name, along with "network_error" for the 5g.
I had a good think about it and a couple of the ones I tried wasn’t available so I landed on this and it kind of stuck kind of wish I had gone for something funny thought.

Always wanted this for a username
You have been banned from Tildes.
RIP
F
Same, buddy.
Damn! Missed that opportunity...
I just checked and I'm surprised this wasn't taken.
Hey, we'd make a good team!
Nice.
I tried admin and administrator to test whether or not they were allowed and both were taken.
I wanted to try user and see if it was a valid option and registration went through!
Admin was already taken when I tried as well, so I just went for the next best thing.
Ugh. That's my 'work' username, I definitely don't want that for my handle. :P
Is "admin" still available? I think that would be just as desirable.
I'm jealous this didn't even occur to me.
I snagged "God" on a website once. I was pretty proud. I don't even remember what website that was anymore.
it's my name
oh hey me too. this was a good opportunity to nab my name for once.
Same
Beat me to it, had to go with PS4 username...
Yup, me too. Also I do like getting in early enough to grab a three letter username. I have one on Twitter too, which I never use but it's there.
Oh yeah, I remember that. that wasn't me (I have @m4t). Scary though. That was the article that made me get off my arse and sort out 2FA on my important accounts, then make my wife and parents do the same.
Same, kinda cool since it's usually taken whenever I make a username somewhere
Do you put any meaning in it? Also, where is it from?
do i put meaning into my name? i mean, it's the name my parents gave me. not sure i understand the question.
where is it from? um, it's short for victoria.
Well, if it's short for Victoria, maybe you think of yourself as victorious?
Hmm, interesting question. I don't at all. I don't think my name has actually had an effect on my life at all.
Ditto
Samsies
Ditto
Wait, are Super Intelligent, Genetically Engineered Gorillas allowed on this site?
wow, really? there’s tori amos and tori spelling, so i didn’t know people didn’t know it was a name. it’s short for victoria for most toris but not all.
Same :)
me too!
Represent. Not many Guyons out there, so nothing too spectacular (also my reddit u/n). I used to have that Twitter handle but deleted my Twitter account at some point and lost it. I regret that.
So that when people say 'etc' (et cetera) it's like they're talking about me ;)
et tu cetera?
wait where am i?
LMFAO!!! I'm dying here laughing at all these names! I'm embarrassed that I didn't even think about the opportunity before me! LOL So many absolute classics here!
I didn't see a "who" to go with "what" tho, is it really not taken?
As I wrote elsewhere in this thread:
You can always PM Deimos to get him to change your username, he's done it several times for new accounts. ;)
EDIT: typo
Sir Rorso of Rothbury? I like it.
It's a great name all round. Very memorable. Thanks for sharing the backstory.
Thanks!
I just wanted that sweet three letter name.
Also, I am an elf.
Hey me too
Same, wanted something not too serious.
Are you racist towards all other races?
No, of course not! I'm not bigoted against any race.
...unless you consider the drow a race.
"Have you heard of the high elves?"
All hail the great hyptotoad!
I DID NOT NOTICE YOUR TYPO.
Simple yet elegant! I love minimalism, reminds me of late medieval plate armor. Like a green one, that looks like a shining emerald...
I did a similar thing, but should have chosen something more generic.
I was pretty interested in cryptography and physics when I was in high school, back in the glory days of Applied Cryptography and A Brief History of Time. So "dice" is sort of a reference both to RNGs and Einstein's famously incorrect statement about God and the nature of the universe.
I guess, God does play you.
A partner in rhyme!
I sat there staring at the registration screen for 15 minutes trying to abuse my early invite with a "clever" name and this was all that i could think of. Creative i know..
I like to have a unique username without underscores or numbers. In this case it was very easy because of how young the site is. I took my name from cirrus clouds, because I like looking up at the sky. It seemed easy to spell and pronounce, and also has some connections with aviation.
Nice. How do you pronounce it?
I pronounce it like cyrus in my head, but it's supposed to be said like 'cer-rus'.
Well, nobody can pronounce Latin. I thought it was 'key-rus'.
Do you find that people take you cirrusly
I use this for most platforms, ones on which I don't particularly care about anonymity. I love how easy it is to stay anonymous on here, and I fight as hard as I can to keep anonymity on the Internet alive, but I don't personally use it.
Mostly because I dunno why I'm not high
Fox it now!
I'm a dude.
Basing my username on reddit after a catch-phrase from a 90s anime that means "you're an idiot" has made forming professional relationships with people at Mozilla, over my running r/Firefox, feel a little weird.
So, well, these are my initials. I figure they've got an 'xkcd' vibe too.
I like to surprise people with the global twitch emotes browser addon.
Used to get letters in high school from various places that would massively butcher my name into things that weren't even close. Took one and now I use it.
Nice, @qleb. Why dod you choose this variation, @queleb? What is your actual name, @cleabe?
I thought I had answered this but apparently I forgot to lmao
I chose this one because it's short and looks really pleasing to me. I really like short, one or two syllable names and this one just stuck because I like how it rolls off my tongue.
My real name? If you spit out enough variations, you'll eventually guess it!
Well, I guess @cled, but how would I know which one is yours, @clad? If I were to guess it, would you tell me, @kleb?
I didn't steal your name, did I?
It's my Reddit username. A combination of Philosopher and bard. I majored in philosophy in college and I play dungeons and dragons. I also majored in English in college and have a fondness/respect for the Bard, so it works on two different levels I guess.
Bard is a class in D&D or something? Sorry, never played it.
Ah sorry, yes! Bards are kind of jack-of-all-trades characters in D&D and are one of my favorite classes to play.
I feel I have the most fun when I play as a bard. You can do some really goofy and creative stuff with the class (true of other ones as well, sure).
And I ALSO majored in English and ended up focusing a lot on Shakespeare! Didn't expect to fall in love with his stuff, but I guess I had the fortune of some really great professors.
I wish I had focused a bit more on Shakespeare. I actually ended up focusing more on 20th century American lit. No regrets except that I wish I had had more time for some additional Shakespeare classes.
Ah, I hope I didn't misinterpret what you meant when you said the Bard now, lol
20th century American lit sounds fun. Anything in particular?
hi there
Used to get called a virgin all the time in video games. Embraced the meme I guess hoping to make people laugh. Stuck with it since.
Well, Bear describes me, and I have what some might call an unhealthy love for all things bear, both 2 legged, 4 legged, teddy and otherwise. (that means I'm a gay man into bears, and I also heavily support wild bear conservation)
Plus we're cute, damnit! :-)
This username and variants tend to be my go-to. This variant is my preferred, but it's often taken way before I sign up for a service.
But why this username in particular? I like green and I've always been somewhat fascinated by knights, and the name "emerald knight" has a nice ring to it (I think so, anyway). It's really not any more complicated than that.
I've been fascinated by medieval arms and armor for some time now, and I just love late medieval plate armor! Makes me think of an emerald baron, who made a fortune by mining emeralds and has a fancy emerald-colored set of plate armor in his house.
Plate armor or gtfo.
But seriously, there's a certain allure to some nice plate armor and a good longsword. Your thought of the emerald baron is an interesting one!
If there is going to be an RP group, shall you go there?
I used to have a name that started with Emerald too ironically, so your username is very distinctive to me at least. :D I always instinctively think it's one of my own comments for a second.
There's another user around here with the name Space_Kn1ght (I think it was). Really threw me off seeing that one!
I just went with my name
Yeah, but why though?
Isn't it usually spelled Barbara? Or is it pronounced differently?
It's a handle I've been using online for a while. It was an attempt to be clever by spelling anomaly anomalously, but I suspect that most folks just assume I can't spell. They wouldn't be particularly wrong... though this particular misspelling was intentional.
My initials ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
My friends and I discovered the joys of spoonerisms a few years back, to the point that one of us answers to the spoonerized version of history name. One night, we were playing EDH (a Magic format) and my one buddy's general was Azusa, Lost but Seeking. I thought that was the best spoonerism fodder we'd found since Chuckie Finster and adopted it as a username shortly thereafter
Love the Azusa deck. What commander were you playing?
Hmm. It was early in my EDH career... probably Omnath, Made of Pissed Off
Ha! Very nice!
I like mangoes and I like tigers.
Do you like them together or separate?
Either. I suppose my username could also be referring to a mango colored tiger.
My name is Daniel, and I figured, hey, why not be one of those trendy people with only their name as their username. Loving it.
Hey there. Nice name.
Thank you. I go by Daniel more than I go by Dan so I figured I'd pick up my legal name on here.
I guess it's one of my favorite English words, sounds good and it's short. And it makes me think of potentiality and middle ground.
My name is a kind of falcon. I was reading The Once and Future King and they referred to the gyrfalcon as a falcon that only kings were allowed to own. I thought that was pretty neat so I brought it into my rotation of usernames.
Some people call me the space cow boy
Also a fan of cowboy bebop
Did you have to spell it like that, though?
YE BOIIII. But no lol the boi part is just a running meme with my friend group
I think that a four letter username is desirable, and often this one is taken.
I find four letters for a username to be excessive.
If you're not squashed up against the lower size limit you're not trying hard enough.
What is your opinion on ten letters though
When I first made a reddit account I wanted asdf as my username but it wasn't available so I went with asdf1617. So when I made my tildes account I wanted to take asdf but I instinctively types in asdf1617 because I've gotten so used typing that. I only realized the next day so now I'm stuck with it.
Edit: deimos came through and my username is now asdf.
"asdf" is still available...
I know it is, I meant to take it. But when I was signing up for tildes I instinctively typed in asdf1617 since I'm so used to logging in to reddit with that username.
Let me be blunter: "asdf" is still available if you want to create it for yourself to use.
I've also seen comments around the place which indicate that Deimorz is open to changing usernames.
I've sent deimos a pm asking to switch my username, hopefully he's cool with it.
Also out of interest, how do you know what usernames are taken?
We all have a user profile page. Yours is https://tildes.net/user/asdf1617
Change that last bit of the URL ("asdf1617") to a username you're interested in checking out. If it comes up with a valid web page complete with posting history, it's taken. If it comes up with a "404 Not Found" error (like https://tildes.net/user/asdf does), it doesn't exist, so that means it's not taken.
Cuz 2001: A space odyssey is awesome! :)
So it fits.
Who can guess my name?
Richard? You can probably guess mine easier :)
That's right. Yours is.. Christian?
Minimum length is three digits and 123 was taken, so why not get in while the getting is good?
Just skipping over @456, eh?
Plus it's the punchline to the joke "Why was six afraid of seven?".
I use this name for everything. Started as a name I used for terraria
I found this. Does this have anything to do with your name?
No but that's fucking awesome you found that!
You can steal it for your avatar on other sites.
Yeah! Show all those other Jacksons in the world that you're unique!
My name is a reference to Gabe "The Inconceivable Glue Man" Degrossi, a character created by Jerma985. Why? Cause Jerma is hilarious.
Ah, I forgot about this video! Love Jerma and Ster and their content.
It’s a reference to my favorite tv show right now, and I happen to drive a Pontiac.
I've just started watching this show, and that episode was amazing!
It's an obscure ecological thought experiment describing a hypothetical super beast that I thought sounded cool
It's my first name. I normally have to do my full name, but it was actually available for once!
It's my name.
Your name is Ten? Like the number 10? What's the origin of that?
Chose the name that I have used since the good ole BBS days :)
At least now I do not have to wait in a queue for days to get access to information :=
Because it describes every single thing I would ever post anywhere.
~meirl
I really like the book the hitchhiker guide to the galaxy. The extra b in Beebblebrox is because ZaphodBeeblebrox is usually taken. I would always add an extra b because of that. I could have taken the real name here, but at this point I'm just used to the extra b.
It's you! You explained some tildes things to me recently (me under a different handle) on Reddit.
Definitely appreciate the time and attention!
My favorite book is Flowers for Algernon, plus my name.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve grown quite weary.
Same! It's one of the reasons behind my username.
You say the "book" is your favourite. Have you read the original novella, or only the later expanded full-length novel? I think the shorter novella packs more of a punch than the novel.
You should!
I've been using this handle for several years. I was really into the idea of synths and cybernetics when I made it up. the "angel" part is from a story my partner made up when we were much younger. I still love both the story and him, and it's nice to have a username that reminds me of that every time I see it.
Meristele is a name I've used for 10 years or more. Before that I was Chanterai. (No, I don't sing well. I just like to!)
Beryl. Rhymes with peril.
The Crown S02E04. The dark room scenes. Beautiful episode.
I haven't watched The Crown (is it any good?), but I do know that a beryl is an emerald, and now, emeralds always make me think of knights and their shining emerald armor.
oh it's a very good show. gorgeous visuals and soundtrack.
I just chose the same name as my reddit username, which is based on one of Cartman's catchphrases from South Park. The original intention was for it to be a novelty account where all my comments would be what Cartman might say.
It's so hard to keep up a personality. Maybe you can revive this idea here?
It's hella hard.
I did the same thing for this username on reddit. It was originally going to be a novelty where I would respond to all of those PM_ME_X users and I would just drop a comment with whatever their name requested. But I got bored of that after like two times, and then I nuked my old main account and just started using this one full time.
I use this name on every account for familiarity purposes. If I ever actually "make it", I'd probably use this as my official penname and whatnot.
Luna is a nickname I go by on Twitch (edit: not my username, but people tend to abbreviate it in chat as Luna), and also because I'm a Brony and my favorite princess is Luna.
Go to ~tv and create discussions with a "my little pony" tag. That's the way to get ~tv.mylittlepony to happen.
Yikes... :/
I have a different username that I've used for absolutely everything online, including reddit. I decided I wanted a bit of a fresh start, what with the aspirations to greater privacy. Dunno why I picked this particular name; it just felt good.
You can ask our lovely admin to change it, he’s done it once so far.
I took my usual name and shortened it to the shortest I could get, because I have to show I was early somehow, right?
I like toast
I like this name. Short, doesnt mean anything, anonymous.
But... It does mean something? To your point, it doesn't seem to have a lot of connotation or baggage, though.
Technically it does have a definition. But I don't mean for it to be taken that way. Just a name to me basically.
I forgot to add, I do like the idea of this being an ironic name. I pride myself on being positive and cheery. So I think it'll be funny for someone with this name to be hopefully seen as a good guy.
YER A WIZZARD, ACRID!
NO YER NOT...
Eh, since I spend so much time modding music, it's about time I had a username that reflects my favorite album.
Did you used to mod a League of Legends subreddit?
Nope. I only mod a half-dozen music subs on reddit. This username was taken over there, though. Before that I modded on other sites and forums, mostly under my old handle of evilnight.
I was /u/PitchforkAssistant on reddit, so I grabbed @Pitchfork because I could.
I’ve been playing a lot of Mario Party and I like space ✨ 🍑
It's my reddit name.
But what does it mean?
Nothing in particular, sorry. Just some of the letters from an older online account rearranged.
pztc is that you?!
Lesale is the name of Venomancer from Dota. I love everything about his appearance, gameplay, and lore. "Cop" came from "QoP" which stands for Queen of Pain, another Dota character I sometimes play.
I am from Australia hence the Oz bit. And Poider is a funny bogan character that actor Eric Bana played in a few comedy sketch shows. I'm just as big a bogan as Poider I reckon!
Just to clarify for our non-Aussie friends: "Poider" (actually "Poida") is how someone with an exaggerated Aussie accent pronounces "Peter". Eric Bana's character's name was actually Peter, but it's pronounced Poida in his Ocker/bogan accent.
Struth. I've been spelling wrong all these years!
You can spell it however you want - it's your username, after all. I was just choosing a more phonetic variant to demonstrate to non-Aussies how we pronounce the "-er" ending: without the "r"! :)
Nameplay mostly.
I was just joking with a friend who is signing up that he should be TildeSwinton -- and then I found you.
Great username!
Part of my name but common enough that I can remain anonymous until I choose to
Are you an 808 person? :)
The first two I tried where taken, and then typed this in. Not sure I love it.
I've been using this username everywhere for a decade.
It’s an ingredient in my favorite soup. And it’s fun to say, is pronounced soon-doo-boo.
I use this name for everything. I've been using it for years. No point in changing it.
Because it's my current Reddit name and people know me by it
I tried getting "Nil" but someone already had it ... I've actually been lucky enough to get that on a few established websites/forums that have been online for years!
Whoever you are Nil, here's to you.
Thanks! It's the first time I'm using it. Normally I choose my real name, but then I thought, I'd enjoy some anonymity for a change! :)
That's great, I also chose it because it stands for nothing and it's about as short as you can make a username. Some sites don't even allow less than 4-5 chars.
I chose ubel because it's also short and simple.
I choose my name because I like an unwanted or used person. I know it's boring most likely. I've been diagnosed Bi-polar and with Complex PTSD amoung other issues. One of my previous therapists pointed out at least 23 life events that in their self could cause long lasting severe mental illness. So with a said. I feel like I am alone on a planet of billions of people. Thanks for taking the time to read my comment. Hope you all have fun filled day and life!
I usually use lobster or some variation of it on all my message board accounts.
I’m curious about why @DefSci chose that name... :)
This person is one of the finest humans I know.
Definitely Science. (When given a choice) ha!
Same as on reddit. :)
It's my normal online handle but it's a combo of my first and middle name, Dale + Ogburn = Dogburn. I have no desire to combine fire and dogs.
I use this username for several other sites/services.
Honestly idk, gonna have to think about this question a bit more...
I have been using this username for at least a year now - it stands for malfunctioningtranshumanist, a monicker I assumed, together with the name Zero, at a particularly low point in my life. Though, I think that it describes me pretty well, so it stuck.
It's one of those traditional Lisp functions for accessing parts of nested lists, long and obscure enough to generally be available, and it rolls of the tongue nicely (I pronounce it k(a)h- dah- drr).
I used to think that programming would be my métier, but I ended up switching to humanities research (I'm studying to get a master's in linguistics, and am quite into literature). But I still use Emacs and other Unix tools, and write little scripts for myself here and there.
I chose this name because it's nice and short, and it isn't searchable.
It also sounds like sticks if you try to pronounce it.
In Japanese, lilies are called 百合 (yuri), which is what they also call the genre focusing on lesbian relationships. As for the three y's, it's a reference to Reol's Twitter handle @RRReol. The two capital L's in turn reference iLLness LiLin, a boss track in the rhythm game SOUND VOLTEX.
It's my name and i love cannabis 😁 (pretty obvious lmao)
It's the username I've always gone with. Not sure if I like it that much anymore, but until I'm dead set on a username I like better it's what I'm sticking with because at least there's consistency there.
When I first made a reddit account I wanted asdf as my username but it wasn't available so I went with asdf1617. So when I made my tildes account I wanted to take asdf but I instinctively types in asdf1617 because I've gotten so used typing that. I only realized the next day so now I'm stuck with it.
It just has a nice “rot” to it, I’ll let readers figure it out though as it’s not something that should be written out loud :)
soy sauce!
Not the right kind of rot :)
( that said now I’m hungry, good job guy :o )
It's the same as my protonmail username, which was made by DuckDuckGoing "random passphrase."
I’m using this name everywhere I can since the first time I used it for my first VAX/VMS mainframe account.
Because I try to
To not to make hard to the evil corps to connect my profiles on many platforms. I use that almost everywhere.
This is the first time I've had the same username on more than one site.
It happened more by accident than design.
This has my go-to online username since about 2014.
Origin: I wanted a manly but also unique semi-permanent username, so, being about 15 at that time, I modified 'draco', which means 'dragon'(well, more like serpent) in Latin, and there you have it - drakinosh.
Line from a poem I really liked. Moving away from prior Reddit username as seemed time for a change.
It's the nickname my highschool friends gave me after I got an MD
This phrase randomly came up in a conversation with my boyfriend. I'm also trying use a different username that isn't so obviously connected to me that people in real life can find me.
I was looking at a plate of biscuits at Bob Evans, and my fantasy baseball team is the Montgomery Biscuits because I got drafted to that team in Road to the Show in the Show '14.
This username started as a nickname I got from a guy who I played football with as a kid, and it's stuck as my username for almost everything online since. No point in breaking the trend here.
I chose mine because I've always used it for websites.
In an effort to lay claim to the title of the most boring username on Tildes, mine is the first letter of my first name, then my last name.
I wanted a name for a dwarven character in an RPG years ago so came up with something that sounded appropriate to me, been using it most places since then as it's usually not taken.
I've used this name for my online accounts since my first runescape account at the age of about 10. Its not a real word so its never taken anywhere but its nice to grab it this early in the life of something like this.
I feel I'm fairly reasonable, open to changing my opinions. I also try not to take claims at face value without due diligence.
it's short, easy to remember and my initials! Win win [win]!
damn, now i feel shitty about my username.
Don't feel bad, you're in the elite 3 character club 😎
I use this for almost everything, have since I created my steam account
I have this username everywhere, I'm extremely googlable though. Not like I was trying to hide anything by making online accounts though.
This is the one I use the most online, when available. It's from an episode of Futurama.
Picked /u/10thTARDIS on Reddit a few years back (apparently 6 years ago... wow, it doesn't seem that long), and I've generally used it for everything since then since it's almost always available. Though apparently somebody used it a few years before me and grabbed the gmail username before I could... but they didn't get the .com domain!
Awoooooooooooo
Because I love MDK.
V is my nick, but Tildes does not allow single letter usernames. So...
now I am wondering if its possible to change the username
It is. If you ask @Demios, he has changed a few other people's names for him. Just send him a PM.
okay, I will do. Thanks for the tip! :D
I was doing a reread of one of my favorite books and decided to name my username after one of the "Gods" from the book. I didn't use the same username as my Reddit account because my personal rule is to never reuse usernames.
This is the name I use for literally everything since when I first made it it only pulled up a couple Spanish websites and a mis transcribed pdf document
{first-name}{lastname} is my go to for usernames since about 2008. It's a great reminder that anonymity on the internet is a thing of the past.
Didn't want it to be incorporated with my tumblr and online persona so I used my personal and reddit username
I had Golden Girls on last night for background noise. The episode with Blanche's "Moonlight Madness" party came on. I went with this.
The technological Singularity is near!
I use this username in lots of places. And 47 is my favorite number.
I was listening to a song by At the Drive-in. I don't usually share usernames between websites.
It was available.
Websites quickly run out of available 3 letter usernames and I wanted something easy to remember.
First name already taken. Went with an animal I like c: Gotta get in on those simple short usernames while they last :)
Came up with this username on other domains on an impulse(heh). I really like the concept of a paradigm shift, and was taking a physics course at the time and really liked what I came up with.
I'm arachnophobic and the concept terrifies me. Exposure therapy I guess
I really like Pink Floyd
You Animal.
For starters, it's a name I use everywhere, almost like a brand. But where did it come from, I hear no one asking.
It's my rap name, if I ever became a rapper
Because that’s the sexy nickname that Monica gives to Chandler in the TV show Friends.
It's my Reddit name.
Great, you gotta scroll all the way down to comment.
This is intentional, and here is the reasoning if you'd like to know.
And people could always just press END if they want to comment right away.
Actually perhaps we shouldn't let people know that as it is better for people to read the whole thread first.
... I also just realized how old this post is but I'm going to go ahead and still post my reply.
It's just a shortening of the username I've had since 1st grade. Picked the first word that popped into my head and my favorite number repeated twice (because 0 times and once were both taken), and I've used it more or less for everything ever since. Recently I've started shortening it to just Diff when I can get away with it.
IDK I just like crocodiles I guess
I have this username because I'm puertorican and we often refer to ourselves as boricuas (while speaking spanish) rather than puertoricans. Another bonus it's that's its pretty short and easy to remember.
this is my username in most places
Shortened the username I've put to use on other sites.
Still addicted to cigarettes, too, so there's that.
Because it is a factually correct username
I wanted something short and anonymous. My user name on most other sites makes it too easy to figure out who I am.
It was the first name i could think of
I had a good think about it and a couple of the ones I tried wasn’t available so I landed on this and it kind of stuck kind of wish I had gone for something funny thought.
Why "Five"? Does that have any significance for you?
I've seen you around, and I've been curious why you chose "Five" to identify yourself.
No it was available and I wanted a number so went for it
Okay. Thanks.
Wanna share my pronouns and encourage that practice and I think it just sounds catchy
Lol.....
I have a bit of s temper, red hair and I'm hot
Thought this was going to be more like Reddit.
I am TieDyeHippy on another site and wanted to be a different kind of hippy for Tildes, so I came up with this one.
It's the name I use everywhere else
I just found the name of this song cool so i stole it.
