Genuinely in awe that anyone is celebrating this, especially from angles of privacy. The law itself is vague and allows for the U.S. government to assert any entity as adversarial or foreign. Right now state officials are openly calling student protestors "terrorists." The room and opportunity to abuse this is wide open, and only endangers people's privacy and first amendment rights...

Hm, interesting point. I hope you're right. honestly I'm not a legal expert (or knowledgeable about legality at all, in any form) so I have no idea if what I'm saying is true, I just worry for any possible negative implication for game preservation.

Even then, if they do manage to prove it damages sales now, what about later when the switch is EOL or even abandonware? It would still remain illegal, no? I'm asking because I have no idea to be honest.

Praying this doesn't work out, otherwise we have a horrible legal precedent to set. If Nintendo gets their way, on top of crippling future preservation of switch games, this would also allow them to go after emulation projects of retro consoles even more, since what Yuzu does is not anything different from other emulators like Project 64 as far as I'm aware.

Game preservation is too important for me to care even remotely about piracy, not sorry.

This is terrible. I'm sure Nex is in heaven right now, they didn't do a single thing wrong. Nothing that would ever, ever warrant the vile hatred and violence that came their way. I somehow doubt the school (given its history) will do anything to prevent a future incident like this either which is deeply saddening.

Praying for Nex and their family, and for everyone suffering at the hands of discrimination right now. God bless.

I'm Catholic myself, so this is a very nice and welcoming change to see within my church. I've been pushing for this for awhile so this is genuinely fantastic to see. Hope they go even further with it, and also crack harshly down on the conservative priests who will inevitably lose their cool over this.

Edit: I should also mention: this very clearly isn't enough, it makes the obviously horrid exception for if "it causes scandal." Frankly, there should be no scandal from respecting and loving God's creation except one that is malicious and at no fault of the trans person in question. Shame.

    1. I'm religious so, God. Sorry but the answer for that is gonna be incredibly blunt. And even if you're not into divine command, there are many, many secular frameworks of morality that we commonly understand and accept that simply obviously condemn the actions of Israeli apartheid. From the perspective of simple utilitarian observation, of the golden rule, &c it's untenable.

oh and also Israel's occupation and treatment of Palestinians directly violates international law.

    1. The international community has failed routinely to serve even the smallest of condemnations for what should be incredibly cut and dry cases. Even asking Israel to not indiscriminately bomb civilian populations on purpose is too much for them. I think a great place to start for consequences would be to stop cheering them on as they slaughter innocents.

uBlock Origin with firefox works flawlessly. Personally I'd just opt to not ever use YouTube (unironically) as google (and most of the unfree web tbh) is just strictly evil and a waste of energy. That's an utterly massive ask though, so I can get why people wouldn't take the radical route like I am.

Personally, I genuinely believe advertising is evil intrinsically so I don't give a shit about piracy. And neither should you honestly, YouTube has been running at a loss for decades and it's not your responsibility to pay for infinitely reproducible content, or let the site spy and invasively collect data on you.

yes it's said extensively, but the article devalues the importance of privacy in how exactly it chooses to frame this, which again, I think is a grave mistake and error. A right to privacy is an inherent good, it is always strictly better to have it than to not have it. My point is that its current legal implementation is not a true, genuine right to privacy. You can't really criticize "right to privacy" as an inherent tool for oppression when it is never consistently applied, and always arbitrarily measured surrounding the context of broader aims.

You can't just drop this without explaining why!

No? of course I can. But I did explain why.

Harsh disagree with the comments here, I found this article to be just be dribble honestly. Privacy is not valued as an end itself under the context of the supreme court or the broader legal system but rather as a way to enforce goals and functions of the state that long predate the recognition of any right to privacy. The right to privacy is enforced when it safeguards who the law wants to safeguard, (the powerful) and it is dismantled when it safeguards who the law doesn't want to safeguard (the unpowerful).

The right to privacy is very much desirable as an end in of itself but we should not conflate the real, actualized goal of privacy with the legal implementation of it in America as it is interpreted by ghoulish conservative judges. They are not the same, the only shared characteristic is the name.
