So the main thing is how clues work. In CoC you use one of your myriad abilities, with a binary roll. You may have to use search books, or Biology, or Nature for some checks. The main problem with this is dealing with a bad row of rolls leaving characters without the proper clues - usually having the narrator intervene in some creative ways. There's is also the fact that separating skills so much can be difficult: there's so many of them and can be hard to create a character properly. Plus due to being a D100, unless you have very very high skills, failure is really common. Now, all of this isn't a dealbreaker and plenty of players/narrators have dealt with it in many ways. For a experienced group all of this is usually overcame with "good dm'ing". This is also a problem acknowledged in proper CoC, which is why they have introduced things like pushed rolls, luck or Idea.

Trail is more tailored for these games and can be easier on novices without having to make rules on the fly. The skills are less granular, and more investigative focused. If you have the relevant skill, like Library, you automatically get any core clue. Furthermore, you can spend points of the skills and get additional clues. So it's more like a "stamina" system where the players trade effort and time into investigation instead of failing around until they can get a success.

You still have rolls for other general situations. For example, you may want to be driving to chase a suspicious guy. Then you will a D6 and succeed with a 4+ (or whatever the difficulty is). Before you roll, you will expend Driving skill points as much as you want, and those will be a modified by that amount. Rolls are only required where there a consequences for failure, of course.

Its a system explicitly designed for investigation, and falls flat if you want something more pulpy with the investigators wanting a tactical firefight with cultist, for example. But for general investigation I think D100 is very clumsy and requires the narrator to be experienced.

While the 7ed is a substantial improvement with Luck, I still feel that it's clumsy unless the narrator is very familiarized with running games. Trail is much better for investigation games, IMHO.

    I love the CoC d100 system. :-D

Cthulhu is everywhere right now. While I love it, it seems in many places it gas become just substitute with weird monsters, a soft horror relying on cults rather than jumpscares. Which is not bad, but I felt the 'cosmic horror' part of it is missing in many of its implementations.

That said the system cannot be worse than the traditional D100 of Call of Cthulhu so...

I used to use a heavy custom Nova but then I swapped to Niagara. It just works, it looks nice and I can just forget about anything. I bought it, no sub or anything, no hassle.

And for something very different, but also that is creative with the medium, there's 'Lonely at the center of the Earth' by Zoe Thorogood. Warning, it's very depressing.

However Im sure that for most small villages the tone is going to be much lighter.

I disagree. Things do not scale the same way in all places. The discrepancy between a teacher and a programmer may be 4x in the US, but be in the same ballparks as others.

The work you do isn't as much a factor as where you are, as the perception of the job, the supply/demand, local industry, cost of living etc play much larger factors.

I know everyone wants to think that some jobs are some kind of magical meritocratic stuff where you get X money because you are Y more productivity or Z more responsibility, but really, it isn't that much of a factor.

As an example, I was working as a developer in my country for 35k, which is average for a programmer, and slighty above average salary (IT industry is not strong here), and then got a job for 50k remote working for an US company with raises that have left me with about 100k, which is very, very good in my country. My work is actually easier than my old company (I also put insane hours, but I also had that before).

I'm not assuming OP is in the US. That kind of discrepancy happens a lot in the EU, though, which is my point.

Like, I would understand if this was an issue for late teens believing they are gonna be rich and muscled and all that typical stuff.

But that's not really the case, Andrew Tate has a lot of followers with age 10-12. That's insane, and I don't understand how anything he says is even relatable to them. Wasn't he even arrested? He's very obviously a scam!

IMHO lisp-likes (I especially like clojure) may not be the easiest languages to fix a problem, but after they are done they tend to be very readable and easy to mantain and follow. I think there's a very special joy on that.

Python has like no friction, but I very often find my scripts to be very hacky since they are just made for specific things. A large app in python can be hard to mantain.

Rust is something I really like, as it has everything I feel lacking in C++ (my day to day language) but honestly I wish the borrow checker was smarter. Making some data layouts is a massive PITA.

C++ however is just horrible. The std is dysfunctional and every module has its own way of doing things, I discover gotchas often and new stuff is often undercooked. But the worst of all is building, one of the worst systems. This is especially true when crosscompiling.

I do on occasion other types like cheesecake (Basque/Spanish style), breads (substuting water with a dark beer can give it a strong flavor, although it makes it more dense), ricotta cookies (love how they can be shaped) and every year I do a Roscón de Reyes, a traditional 'cake' for January 6th in Spain.

Pratchett did it well. His novels were amazing, he built a complex world but that wasn't focus. Every novel has an actual meaning and objective, and the world gets polished as a result. They are all standalone and fairly short, but still manage to say more that Name of the Wind.
