These drives are just a cost center for organizations. They can't repurpose them. They can't sell them for much value. Most of them are outdated. Most of them specialized for data centers (where noise, heat, and electricity consumption are less problematic).
Rather than trying to convince a whole room full of people that you can invest a bunch of time and effort to make these drives "somewhat valuable", it's far easier to simply tell everyone "we destroy them".

I learned (though this is through others on the internet) that an enemy does not have to take a prisoner if the situation does not allow them to do so or would be considered too dangerous. My understanding is it would be near impossible to take a prisoner in a close quarters combat situations unless all other threats have been clearly neutralized and you're in a position to safely receive the hostages. In a trench at the front lines, that's nearly impossible with shelling, drones, tanks, backups, etc, etc, etc.

Small sub-reddits really aren't hard to moderate. They're going to continue to have people who are willing to step in and run those communities.
Moderation only becomes a problem in the large communities. Reddit has a unique architecture that aggregates the largest communities. Unlike FB and Twitter which need to moderate a near limitless number of groups and posts, Reddit really only needs to moderate 5k sub-reddits to maintain a high-quality frontpage. Outside of that, they'll likely find enough willing people to run the smaller sub-reddits.

You will end up in one of the situations that I've described. The vast majority of Reddit users simply do not care. Communities will either become Reddit moderated or migrate elsewhere. So far, I've seen an astonishingly few communities migrate. Leading me to believe that most communities will simply fizzle out without a bang.
Even with the protests, Reddit still had a lot of content. The majority of consumers were mildly inconvenienced for a day.

There are one of two, clear outcomes:
-
a subreddit actually cares and moves to another platform. I think
startedStarTrek did this. -
a subreddit throws a temper tantrum while relying entirely on the platform to throw that tantrum. At some point, they have to realize they simply don’t own the platform in the way they think they do.

Despite my parents being great (and very considerate of the impact of their actions), our daughter is always a challenge after seeing them. I think it's just the natural part of the "let down" after a mentally rewarding social action. Kind of like a hang-over for toddlers.
There's just no way to avoid it because toddler brains are so easily stimulated. When you remove that stimulation, their brain craves continued stimulation.

"You can talk now, but not then"

"You can stand here, but not there"
-
"You have to do this in that situation"
-
"Ugh. Why can't you hit a shot more than 50 feet"...."Oh crap, you hit the ball too far. You almost hit that group"
-
"Why'd you choose that club? That was clearly the case for this club."
-
"Why'd you choose that ball? You'd do better with this ball."
-
"Oh, there's a stroke limit. You can't finish the hole".
-
"Oh, yea. Pace of play. You should just pick your ball up"
-
"Oh shit. Don't drive the cart there. And, you can only drive perpendicular there"
-
"Don't be too loud. Don't have too much fun. Don't do anything that anyone else on the course could interpret as not being miserable".
I really enjoy swinging a golf club and visiting the range, but I generally find the attitude golfers have towards others to be completely insufferable.

For me, I find it enjoyable/interesting to watch how much better the pros are than me. Like, I know the pros are amazing in Hockey/Football/Basketball/Baseball, but golf just lays it out in such simple terms.
On the surface, golf is a stupid simple game. Hit a ball with a stick to get in in the hole. It's not real-time. You don't have to defend against an all-star or rapidly developing play. In fact, it's really just you and your skills being bench marked. It's literally only "well can you do this one-thing in slightly different scenarios".
Golf also has two other unique things going for it:
-
Because the "game" is so "simple", there are metrics on everything - and those metrics are extremely meaning. In most action sports, so much is situational. "Miss that shot", "missed that catch", "that was a bad play" can all be attributed to situational elements. In golf, it's extremely clear what's a good/bad shoot.
-
Golf is the only sport that I've literally not improved by practicing. It's infuriating.
For me, this means watching golf is simply awe-inspiring. The pros just play at a level that is just unbelievably better than the average player and they do it in a way that's unbelievably clear. The pros hit shots 2x as far as me, while being unbelievably more accurate. They hit shots that I can only dream of attempting. When they do end up in trouble, they have some trick up their sleeves. Even when they're playing bad, they're playing miles better than I could ever play.

There's just no relationship between 8 fingers in contact with a physical keyboard and 1 (or 2) thumbs typing on a digital screen. The muscles are completely different, so you have nothing to gain by the consistency between both.
It is extremely annoying how every TV service uses a different layout. Ideally, everything would simply default to the system keyboard, but at least ABC is consistent. In fact, you can offer an ABC keyboard an know it will "work" for any english speaking audience. No Colemak, No Drovak, No ISO/ANSII. In fact, you avoid this whole long list of QWERTY-like, but not QWERTY layouts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_QWERTY_keyboard_language_variants

This allowed me to be an non-functioning human for a while.
During the first 6 weeks (my timing may be off), they need to be fed every 2 to 4 hours, including at night. Then it tapers down to a turning point around 6 months (where they often can start sleeping through the night).
What's not obvious in that statement is how this feeding cycle happens 24/7 and how draining that can be if you don't coordinate with your partner. In other words, you'll need to make time specifically for your partner to sleep and vise-versa. If you're working a full time job, that means coming home and taking care of the baby so your wife can sleep. It's basically, work, baby, sleep, repeat for a while. All while both you and your partner are likely on edge and crabby.
I don't know your financial situation, but I'd absolutely advocate for taking the most time you reasonable can. I've had several colleges who've split their parent leave up. Nearly all of them have taken 2 weeks during the first stint. That seems to be the minimum for adapting to having a baby around.
I'd especially advocate for not really working about "unable or struggling coworkers". Surface these concerns concerns with your manager, document everything you can, and start the hand offs right now. Your company will eventually need to survive without you. This is a great time to figure it out.
As an aside, some industries require all employees to take a two-week vacation every year. It's primarily intended to help capture fraud, but it also surfaces risks - like key employees and business continuity. Your parental leave is a great time for the business to figure out how to run without your presence and eliminate the "bus factor".

I've been on Reddit for nearly a decade. Over the past few months, I've been feeling more and more like the content is just variations of the same thing. Echo cambers tend to form quickly and breadth of discussion kind of sucks. I've recently been looking for more alternatives outside of Reddit with fresh content.

My...I personally think it's more usable than I expected. There's not much rich content, but there is content. It's moving slower than normal, but still faster than most other news aggregators.
My hypothesis is Reddit has a much larger internal moderation team than they lead onto. They're running the biggest subs that are still up and I expect they'll be expanding to take over other subs. This is a strong and direct counter to the argument that "volunteer mods are necessary".
We very well could see Reddit come out of this even stronger by proving they weren't bluffing.
This likely miss on the sound stage, but I'm extremely happy with my Turtlebeach Stealth 700 Gen 2 headphones. They offer dual connectivity:
A wireless dongle for gaming/low latency
Bluetooth for connecting to a phone.
Both devices can play at the same time, so you can have game audio fast while listening to music on your phone.
In general, you'll need something with a usb dongle.
