Since OP asked for over-ear headphones, I also want to recommend Airpods Max. I was absolutely baffled when I put them on for the first time. My partner stood right in front of me and talked, but I couldn’t hear anything unless he raised his voice. The effect wore off a tiny little bit over the months, but once I play music quietly I can basically hear nothing from the outside.

I came here to mention Beau is afraid, I just recently saw it. What a strange movie. I really had to sit down and think about this one for a while. I came to the conclusion, that we‘re viewing this whole experience through someone’s eyes who suffers from severe anxiety and from that perspective it mostly makes sense to me. Loved the acting and visuals, Aster makes such beautiful films.

I‘m not quite sure how exactly the language system will eventually work out in Life By You, but when you‘re zoomed into a conversation, you have to pick responses in a dialoge. I think you can also zoom out and let them do whatever, but I still haven’t figured out how it’s supposed to work. And when you don’t like the premade text, you can either get one from modders or make it yourself… so kinda also micro managing their lives and I wouldn’t like making my own text, because then it seems like everything is so predictable and determined.

Paralives has come a long way since I first noticed it. Yes, development is slow but I genuinely don’t mind waiting for something good. Other games take years to develop aswell, we just don’t see the entire process and only hear about the game when it’s close to being done and a trailer is released. Paralives had to show us some stuff early in order to get some financial support. I‘m in no rush, I‘m convinced that Sims 5 will be a mess and I‘m also not excited for Life By You for several reasons (no illness, accidental deaths, injuries - even mild ones - in a life sim game for example), so I‘ll just wait it out. Maybe I‘m naive, but I still believe in their project.

I live pretty close to my parents, but only see them once a month or so. My dad is still pretty busy and I am aswell. The thing is, I feel like in families where they visit their parents weekly or bi-weekly they sit down for some coffee to chat and then leave again, that’s at least how my parents did it with my grandparents. But when I visit my parents we always spend the entire day doing some fun activities. My dad then comes over and we get out the old SNES or go to the opera. And my mom and I often go to museums together or events. So we don’t see each other that often, but the time we spend together is A+ quality time. I‘m always trying to spend even more time with them though, especially as they get older.

It‘s also a great question to get to know people in my opinion. Back in the day I used Last.fm to discover new music, the Spotify algorithms are so much better, thank god. Indie films are also a great way to find new music.

Bit of feedback to your recommended songs:

Drop: Nothing I would have ever sought out, but the beat is fire and I actually enjoy the Deutsch Rap in there although by itself I‘m not listening to that genre.

Sweet Relief: Love that kind of style, reminds me a bit of an upbeat Flume, with the dissonant (?) beats.

The last two aren’t my cup of tea, but I appreciate the great vocals of Don‘t Lose Sight.
    Thanks for those!

I haven’t released any of my music yet, because I‘m a perfectionist and will probably never feel like any of my songs is ready haha. One day…

Oh god, an infant at a hospice is rough, the poor family! It‘s cynical to say, but at least they won’t make crippling debt while dying at this hospice. As someone from Europe and an entirely different health care system, I just don’t understand why the rest of the health care system can’t be like that in the US. But hey, I‘m just an outsider looking in, maybe there are good reasons I‘m unaware of.

Discovering and listening to music absolutely is a hobby in my opinion! I sometimes spend hours checking out playlists, my suggestions, etc. What’s your favourite way of discovering music and if you had to recommend me one song, what would it be?

I make music on the computer. I don’t have the room for an actual keyboard and I tried learning the guitar a long time ago and unfortunately was still a teenager and didn’t have the commitment back then. Would love to pick it back up again though. I primarily make some kind of synthwave-ish music (I wish, I‘m not there yet haha).

I was half joking and in comparison to the comments I read, my stories definitely aren’t that interesting but that’s ok!

I once tried wood carving and I already had the feeling that my tools weren’t sharp enough or the wood too hard. I also slipped a couple of times and caught myself being glad, that I held the piece of wood correctly, so I wouldn’t stab myself. Well, just a minute or so later I slipped again and jammed the tool right into my finger and had to go to the ER because of possible foreign objects. It was a small wound, but my apartment looked like a murder scene.

I tried pole dancing just for the fun of it. It was fun alright, but it was mostly torture with how sore my muscles were every time. Pole dancing is no joke and the toughest sport I‘ve ever tried. My legs were so bruised, and so were my arms from my skin being pinched. I also couldn’t walk most of the time because of the extreme hamstring stretching. I wish I could continue, but the classes were very expensive and I couldn’t practise at home (no room for a pole). Maybe some day!

When starting via ferrata we took a class to learn everything about it. Yeah, I don’t know why, but for some reason I was expecting normal hiking but with a bit of extra security in rough and rocky terrain. Nope, at the beginning of the class we had to climb a vertical cliff and while I‘m not afraid of heights, I’m afraid of falling and that was a huge challenge for me. I genuinely thought I couldn’t do it and my heart was pounding after looking down while hanging on that cliff 10m above the ground. I‘m still afraid, but I also have a lot of fun.

I think a lot of the time I pick up hobbies because I want to create something as a gift and can’t find that specific gift in a shop or it’s too expensive. So I buy the materials and make things myself. I got into wood burning that way, crocheting, painting with acrylics, wood carving (but we don’t talk about that), clay modeling and many more.

The ER experience was fascinating and stressful, but mostly I perceived it as positive stress, like a challenge.

The most memorable one… hm, there were a lot of memorable moments, but obviously the sad ones stand out the most. We once got a homeless alcoholic man, who had a pretty nasty infection in his brain and we told him that he‘ll need surgery but he refused (over here he wouldn’t have to pay anything mind you). Knowing that you send him on his way and he‘s going to be dead in a few days was shit. When someone is injured and comes to the ER you can at least do something for them, but not being able to do anything sucks. Seeing how you used to work at a hospice, I bet you know what I mean.

A nice anecdote was a patient with some sort of mental disability, who came in weekly and sometimes even daily. He constantly thought he had an injury and came in with self made bandages. We already knew him very well and just sent him to the doctor for reassurance and when he was particularly concerned he got an x-ray. He probably had 100s of records at our hospital. But he was very sweet and we liked taking care of him and giving him professional bandages to make him feel better and reassured.

I just really wanted to see a good Comic Con, the ones in my country are a bit meh. They improved significantly since I went to Texas, but back then they were a bit sad haha. Nobody wanted to go with me, so I went by myself. I chose the one in Texas because Bruce Campbell was there and I wanted my Evil Dead DVD signed. The other option would have been Tulsa, but 1) that looked a bit less fun and 2) I read something about tornado alley and got scared haha. I booked 2 months in advance, so not that spontaneous.

What surprised me about Texas was how Texan it was. That sounds a bit silly, but the first person I spoke to at the airport wore cowboy boots, a cowboy hat and one of those ties (bolo ties? I forgot the term). And I was also surprised by how communicative people were. I was constantly talking to strangers and that’s just not happening where I live. Maybe to a lesser degree in rural areas, but in a city you generally avoid eye contact lol. I also did not expect the humidity and the amount of gigantic trucks. The homelessness and amout of begging also surprised me tbh.

I agree about the hobbies! And I‘m like my Dad in that regard. I can find enjoyment in almost anything. I think making music, filming/editing and gaming are my perfect trifecta of hobbies. Other than that, I really enjoy crocheting amigurumi, tinkering/repairing things and Via Ferrata. I wish I had more time for very extensive hobbies like DnD. I never tried it because of the commitment, but I would love to.

And yep, stole a tram. I don’t even know why, I think he was drunk if I remember correctly.

Do you have any interesting stories about your time at the hospice? Any memorable anecdotes?

I‘m currently watching a video on Youtube and they just mentioned that famous hard-to-escape prison in the US. They just said its name and I actually know what it’s called, yet I can’t recall it right now. I thought of Azcaban, Alaska, Alcazar (Crying at the Disquotheque was playing along in my head aswell)…. and now as I‘m typing this, it finally came to me that the prison is called Alcatraz. When my brain came up with Alaska I actually had to laugh at what it’s coming up with while desperately trying to find the actual name. Fucking Alaska prison. And when the Harry Potter version comes to mind before the actual one, you know my priorities in life.

Now I want to hear your stories of your brain failing you.

I am the most boring person in this thread, AMA.

    • I used to work at an ER trauma department as nobody important (not a medical professional) and have a few anecdotes from that
    • I once spontaneously traveled to Texas for 5 days to attend Comic Con (I live on a different continent)
    • I have tried a lot of hobbies, I’ve never been bad at any of them, but also not particularly good
    • The most interesting anecdotes I could tell aren‘t mine, but from relatives and people I know (a distant relative I‘ve never met once stole a tram)

People always judge me for this, because they just don’t know it also had a different side to it, but I still feel very positively about the mid 2000s/early 2010s 4chan… if you can call that social media. I feel like some people do, others don’t (I normally wouldn’t, but I think it’s a bit of a grey area). Probably also because I‘m feeling nostalgic, but outside of /b/ there were actually some gems where great discussions could be had. I just really liked that one second you had a deep and beautiful conversation with someone about life and it’s hardships, the next second someone posted the most out of context gif and I just found it hilarious back then. I loved the spooky stories on there, the fake little mysteries, sometimes real mysteries, STEM discussions and the particular humour on there. And no, I don’t mean offensive humour. I mean a certain meme culture that just had a very fertile soil on 4chan boards (although I did like the typical 9/11 gifs, etc.).

When you knew how to navigate it and stay away from the horrific stuff, 4chan was fantastic. On Reddit there’s the misconception that it has always been exclusively bigots and right wing conspiracy theory nut jobs, but that’s just not true. Yes, it had those aswell, but definitely not exclusively. And no matter how hard I’m trying to explain, people won’t hear it. A lot of the memes that later flooded every other website came from 4chan and seeing them come to life was pretty special. If you remember the early gif compilations on Youtube, that’s the kind of stuff I‘m talking about. Today I‘m not interested in 4chan anymore, it definitely changed. And I‘m not denying that parts of 4chan have always been extremely fucked up and I never condoned them.

In general I always loved forums. I was registered on so many different ones. One for each of my favourite bands, a horror movie forum, gaming forum… and I couldn’t wait to come back home from school to check if I had replies to my messages. I liked the specific etiquette on there, even though it was strict. If your message wasn’t formatted correctly, you got a slap on the wrist from the mods. And even though I always found it exaggerated, it had a certain charme. I liked that everyone on there knew each other and friendships could form.

I also liked MySpace and early Reddit was nice, but it unfortunately turned to shit quite fast. I never liked Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

I loved The Palace. Nobody here knows what I‘m talking about when I mention it, so I‘m glad I found someone else talking about it. It was definitely not appropriate for my age (I was 12) and I also had really bad experiences there looking back, but I spent so many hours creating my avatars on there and that gave me a creative outlet as a child. I also just spent a lot of time talking to my friends on there after moving away, so this feels particularly nostalgic to me.

I get the feeling that Millenials all over the world share the same Pokémon story. I mainly had Nintendo handheld consoles for Pokémon. Sure, I also played Zelda on them although I enjoyed the ones on the stationary consoles more, but Pokémon made me buy them. But after Crystal I just wasn’t interested in it anymore and skipped the GBA and initially also the DS. It wasn’t until I was in my mid 20s that I bought a used 3DS to try Black and X. Maybe it was the story, or maybe these entries in the series added some new things that weren’t lackluster like the others.

After that, like you, I also lost interest again and didn’t touch Sun/Moon, etc. I planned to boycott Sword/Shield because I hated that they didn’t have all old Pokémon. But then my partner gave it to me for my birthday and I actually liked it a lot despite it‘s flaws. Let’s go Pikachu was quite cute aswell, but I haven’t touched any of the other Switch games yet. Arceus sadly doesn’t look that good and I also couldn’t get myself to pay for Violet/Scarlet yet after I read the reviews. But maybe now that I read your comment I will. Seems like you and I have a similar Pokémon taste, so I kinda trust you :)

    Edit: Typo

It‘s funny how this post reads as if I‘ve written it myself. It‘s also Pokémon Crystal for me and also for the same reasons. I actually can’t remember ever being upset at not being able to play as my gender, but I still vividly remember the moment when I could decide to be a girl in the game and I was so thrilled about this. And it was also the first game in general for me that had a day/night cycle. Both of these things made the game so much more real to me. The game suddenly knew I‘m a girl and also that it‘s dark out when I‘m playing. I found that so fascinating. But also the Pokémon were my favourites. I loved gen 1 and 2 the most. The ones after that already felt a bit as if they’re running out of ideas.

Other than that, I also really loved Pokémon Yellow, simply because of the addition that now I had a little Pikachu following me around. That was such a cute and nice touch.

And lastly, I even though it isn’t my favourite, I also want to mention Pokémon Black and X because they drew me back in after the series lost me for a few years.

I visited the US once and that week I got more compliments from strangers than during my entire life from friends. Even about things I was very self conscious about, so that trip was the biggest self confidence boost I‘ve ever gotten. I heard that I have a nice smile, that my English is great, they like my accent, I‘m beautiful, my name is beautiful, I‘m an interesting person and much more that I can’t remember anymore. Every time I feel bad about myself, I just think of these lovely people and know that at least I‘m liked in Texas.
