Since OP asked for over-ear headphones, I also want to recommend Airpods Max. I was absolutely baffled when I put them on for the first time. My partner stood right in front of me and talked, but I couldn’t hear anything unless he raised his voice. The effect wore off a tiny little bit over the months, but once I play music quietly I can basically hear nothing from the outside.

I came here to mention Beau is afraid, I just recently saw it. What a strange movie. I really had to sit down and think about this one for a while. I came to the conclusion, that we‘re viewing this whole experience through someone’s eyes who suffers from severe anxiety and from that perspective it mostly makes sense to me. Loved the acting and visuals, Aster makes such beautiful films.

I‘m currently watching a video on Youtube and they just mentioned that famous hard-to-escape prison in the US. They just said its name and I actually know what it’s called, yet I can’t recall it right now. I thought of Azcaban, Alaska, Alcazar (Crying at the Disquotheque was playing along in my head aswell)…. and now as I‘m typing this, it finally came to me that the prison is called Alcatraz. When my brain came up with Alaska I actually had to laugh at what it’s coming up with while desperately trying to find the actual name. Fucking Alaska prison. And when the Harry Potter version comes to mind before the actual one, you know my priorities in life.

Now I want to hear your stories of your brain failing you.

People always judge me for this, because they just don’t know it also had a different side to it, but I still feel very positively about the mid 2000s/early 2010s 4chan… if you can call that social media. I feel like some people do, others don’t (I normally wouldn’t, but I think it’s a bit of a grey area). Probably also because I‘m feeling nostalgic, but outside of /b/ there were actually some gems where great discussions could be had. I just really liked that one second you had a deep and beautiful conversation with someone about life and it’s hardships, the next second someone posted the most out of context gif and I just found it hilarious back then. I loved the spooky stories on there, the fake little mysteries, sometimes real mysteries, STEM discussions and the particular humour on there. And no, I don’t mean offensive humour. I mean a certain meme culture that just had a very fertile soil on 4chan boards (although I did like the typical 9/11 gifs, etc.).

When you knew how to navigate it and stay away from the horrific stuff, 4chan was fantastic. On Reddit there’s the misconception that it has always been exclusively bigots and right wing conspiracy theory nut jobs, but that’s just not true. Yes, it had those aswell, but definitely not exclusively. And no matter how hard I’m trying to explain, people won’t hear it. A lot of the memes that later flooded every other website came from 4chan and seeing them come to life was pretty special. If you remember the early gif compilations on Youtube, that’s the kind of stuff I‘m talking about. Today I‘m not interested in 4chan anymore, it definitely changed. And I‘m not denying that parts of 4chan have always been extremely fucked up and I never condoned them.

In general I always loved forums. I was registered on so many different ones. One for each of my favourite bands, a horror movie forum, gaming forum… and I couldn’t wait to come back home from school to check if I had replies to my messages. I liked the specific etiquette on there, even though it was strict. If your message wasn’t formatted correctly, you got a slap on the wrist from the mods. And even though I always found it exaggerated, it had a certain charme. I liked that everyone on there knew each other and friendships could form.

I also liked MySpace and early Reddit was nice, but it unfortunately turned to shit quite fast. I never liked Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

I loved The Palace. Nobody here knows what I‘m talking about when I mention it, so I‘m glad I found someone else talking about it. It was definitely not appropriate for my age (I was 12) and I also had really bad experiences there looking back, but I spent so many hours creating my avatars on there and that gave me a creative outlet as a child. I also just spent a lot of time talking to my friends on there after moving away, so this feels particularly nostalgic to me.

Don’t know if these are your cup of tea, but I‘m a big fan of the Zero Escape trilogy. I used to play them on my 3DS, but they were released on PC aswell. Your choices do matter, but just a heads up without spoiling too much, you‘ll be able to come back later and see where your other decisions lead. They‘re your classic Japanese visual novel with a pretty whack story.

It‘s funny how this post reads as if I‘ve written it myself. It‘s also Pokémon Crystal for me and also for the same reasons. I actually can’t remember ever being upset at not being able to play as my gender, but I still vividly remember the moment when I could decide to be a girl in the game and I was so thrilled about this. And it was also the first game in general for me that had a day/night cycle. Both of these things made the game so much more real to me. The game suddenly knew I‘m a girl and also that it‘s dark out when I‘m playing. I found that so fascinating. But also the Pokémon were my favourites. I loved gen 1 and 2 the most. The ones after that already felt a bit as if they’re running out of ideas.

Other than that, I also really loved Pokémon Yellow, simply because of the addition that now I had a little Pikachu following me around. That was such a cute and nice touch.

And lastly, I even though it isn’t my favourite, I also want to mention Pokémon Black and X because they drew me back in after the series lost me for a few years.

I visited the US once and that week I got more compliments from strangers than during my entire life from friends. Even about things I was very self conscious about, so that trip was the biggest self confidence boost I‘ve ever gotten. I heard that I have a nice smile, that my English is great, they like my accent, I‘m beautiful, my name is beautiful, I‘m an interesting person and much more that I can’t remember anymore. Every time I feel bad about myself, I just think of these lovely people and know that at least I‘m liked in Texas.

I absolutely agree now, but as kids the sound of a ghost being there was probably more terrifying. Now in hindsight I‘m actually surprised at how brave we were searching the house on our own and not running away immediately. Either brave or stupid, or both. If I heard something like that in my home today, I‘d immediately think it’s an intruder and bolt!

I want to preface this by saying I don’t believe in the paranormal and am a skeptic, so I personally think there has to be a rational explanation, but it‘s been a long time now and we were kids, so I won’t ever get an answer.

When I was 12 or 13 my best friend and I stayed at her Dad‘s house who passed away a few years prior. The house was on the same property as her grandparents house, but they stayed in their house and we played alone in her Dad‘s house during the day, so we were alone. After a long day of doing kid things we had a little fight and I was gathering my things on the second floor while my friend was downstairs sulking. She was very resentful, so for her to start a conversation at this point was very unusual and makes me think she must have been terrified when she asked me „Are you breathing loudly?“. I was confused and hurried downstairs and heard it too. We couldn’t make it out where it was coming from. I can’t remember what it sounded like, if it actually sounded like breathing, or if I was primed by her question but back then I didn’t disagree it sounded like breathing.

We rushed to all the windows to see if they‘re closed, if maybe an animal got inside (the grandparents had cats) or if we heard one from outside. Nope, nothing. The house had light, but no TV, kitchen appliances weren’t plugged in, no stereo, no AC, no heater, nothing that could make that sound. We also ran upstairs to check if it might come from there (although she heard it downstairs first and I didn’t hear anything upstairs). Nothing there either.

When we decided to just leave, we went downstairs again only to find the front door being slightly open. We were so startled, we ran back upstairs and had to muster up the courage to go back down to eventually leave. We were sure that none of us left the door open. Anyway, at some point we just sprinted out of there and wanted to go home. At home my friend then said the breathing sounded a lot like how her dad used to breathe, heavy and labored. I think she does believe it was something paranormal and I can understand that, because to her that would mean she made contact with a loved one, while it wouldn’t mean anything to me.

I don’t think it’s necessarily hostile to us Millenials, it feels hostile in general. It feels competitive and aggressive in selling us things and telling us what we can or can’t do. When I started using the internet it was basically the wild west, everything was just full of surprises, niche corners, not a conglomerate of 5-6 commercial monopolies dominating everything, killing every other platform. It feels corporate now.

Back then it felt self made. We made the memes, the message boards, the small personal websites. Myspace was fun, because it was basically a collection of these small websites for people. Youtube was fun back then with its gif compilations and the first attempts at putting memes into video format. Nobody took anything too seriously, because the internet was basically dominated by teens and early twenty-somethings. Of course it was also a little more horrific, but to be honest, back then I found that thrilling even though I have a bit of a different opinion of it now.

Now the internet isn’t just crowded with our generation who shared a specific kind of humour and a similar outlook on life and similar interests, because most of us were nerds. Now there’s also older and younger generations we have to share the internet with. The older ones are on Facebook, the young ones on TikTok and us Millenials are scattered I think, not really feeling like ‚home‘ anywhere.

Sure, a lot of us are at a life stage now where they have kids and a career to take care of, like another user mentioned. But there‘s plenty of us who have neither, maybe just a dead end job, or just a career that isn’t too demanding. And to a lot of us the internet is a hobby we make room for. I‘m in my early 30s but I still love scrolling through message boards, finding niche little internet mysteries, discussing games and movies, because well… maybe I‘m still a kid at heart, or a nerd or both. But I feel like I can’t do that anywhere anymore. My humour is suddenly cringe, my interests boring and my opinions outdated.

Sorry for rambling, but I‘m just a bit passionate about the old internet culture, because it used to be my happy place and somewhere I could hide together with other awkward nerds from around the globe and we had our inside jokes and everything. I don’t need it like I used to, but sometimes it would be nice to be able to come back and visit. Hope my ramblings made sense.
