This is one of the reasons for me. The industrialization of the whole process changed it from humans simply hunting (as other animals do) or killing farm animals, as it was in the past, to the literal sausage factory that it is today. We've also become more sensitive to the fact that animals feel pain. And when you look at it from an environmental perspective, just how much goes in to raising and slaughtering these massive amounts of animals and the impact that has on the environment, eating less meat as a race because of that is just a bonus.

They have to actually get into the House in January first. It's only the day after midterms and Trump isn't wasting any time. And if Trump fires Mueller before then I'm not sure what comes after that.

True, the subtext was there in the resignation. If at all, I doubt Whitaker will do much to dispel the air of impropriety around his appointment. That includes recusing himself as Sessions did. It's pretty transparent what's going on with this whole thing because normally the deputy AG would take Sessions' place.

The article is short and lacks any real clarifying information so I'll update this as more comes in. Rosenstein has been seen at the White House for a 4PM meeting with Trump so things still in flux.

While that's true, I think it's a bit much to expect from Trump's hand picked people. Even republicans outside of his circle circle the wagons and rally around him like that, with regularity. But has Trump even gone through with "You're fired" even once? There's such a long list so I'm not sure. They've all sort of just slinked off without much fuss. So to me, even as they're being shuffled out of their seats, they mostly follow the same path and leave without much commotion. It would be news to me if one did otherwise.

This guy has made a point of existing and governing in his own reality. Expecting him to change that two years on is really too much to ask for. Yeah, Beto in Texas, Gillum in Florida, Abrams in Georgia*, "Ironstache" Bryce in Wisconsin, the ones we threw the most behind and elevated on a national level lost. And that may be Trump's idea of victory. However they were all (maybe not Bryce) damn near close. Too close to ignore. They've made space for the next person.

Oh, good luck on the novel, and the ones that come after that. I'd definitely have a hard time getting down three novels in 3-4 months like that. I do have enough ideas stashed in my head. And that's good advice. It reminds me of something I like to tell myself: The answer to all of writing's problems is writing. Though that's a bit more concise.

For those that don't know, NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is an annual challenge to write a 50,000 word novel over the course of the month of November. That translates to roughly 1,600 words a day. More info on NaNoWriMo here.

I first tried it two years ago though I fizzled out at around 10,000 words and moved on to another WIP. Last year I didn't formally participate though I made an effort to write something every day. Not sure about my word count.

This year I'm doing a series of short stories in a shared setting since I've been doing more short form writing as of late and I've been mulling over the idea for a few weeks now. It's a nice way to experiment with different settings and themes within a "singular" work. I've made some notes on plot hooks, settings, characters, and ideas I wanted to explore, so it's only a matter of writing the stories now. Maybe I'll even share excerpts as I go along.

So has anyone else made plans to do it this year?

I wish I could find the documentary again but I was just surfing when I found it. Most of the interviewees were Chinese, a few were from other countries in the region. The doc touched on how the standard of living was rising due to the manufacturing there with cities in the East becoming metropolises overnight. China still has heaps of labor potential with the west of the country being less industrialized compared to the east. I'll take a look at that PDF btw.

It seemed like a fundamental difference in culture and the way they thought about intellectual property. So when it came down to it, we (or anyone else for that matter) couldn't really do the same thing they did to us because they simply don't see it the way we do in the west. From the perspective of an outsider looking in that culture of sharing seemed ideal or even conducive for a booming tech economy where everyone is improving upon the ideas of others. And that's not without its problems, as you've pointed out. The economics of it all may be opposed to the culture of sharing.

I'm not too familiar with India and how the pharma industry developed but I have a broad understanding of their role when it comes to generics, so that does make sense.

I watched a documentary on how IP law in the tech industry and a few other factors created the perfect storm for this kind of thing. The gist of it was that ideas could be rapidly iterated on because the idea to execution pipeline is so short there like the article says. Also the culture is different so "taking" someone else's idea and reworking it isn't seen in the same negative "you stole my idea!" light as in the west. One of the guys being interviewed even said that the culture of claiming ideas was stifling things in the west. It happens often and its a feature of the tech community there, not a bug.

So, from that perspective I'm not as sure as I once was in thinking this is an issue. Is this really bad? Maybe for the individual that had their idea copied, but if they copy is cheaper or better in any way doesn't the consumer benefit? I think so.
