KingK does retrospectives on classic video games

RebelTaxi makes a ton of interesting content about animation, both popular and obscure.

Pikasprey Yellow mostly explores the first three generations of Pokemon games in depth – stuff like soft locking, unused content, etc.

Jrose11 has a really interesting series on how to catch the entire pokedex [or as much as possible] in each generation of pokemon game, and more Pokemon stuff. I'm really not that into Pokemon, but it's really interesting to watch people talk about it in great depth.

MagicScrumpy mostly mods Super Smash Bros Melee. He has several different types of videos – making characters more viable, nerfing better characters, giving characters interesting new moves, changing the game physics, etc.

redfuzzydice is the same guy who does MagicScrumpy, but this channel is more dedicated to non-Melee content, which is mostly Super Mario Sunshine. If you like Pikasprey Yellow's lost content videos, you'll probably like redfuzzydice's content.

Summoning Salt has a whole series of "world record progression" videos for speed running video games, in which he details the history of the world record for many different games.

3Blue1Brown has very interesting math videos that usually make difficult concepts much more intuitive. Usually. Sometimes just makes them more confusion, but that's just math.

Historia Civilis makes really cool educational videos about ancient history, in which he'll illustrate the stories of specific battles or other things with simple shapes.

Lindsay Ellis has a ton of interesting video essays about musicals and Disney movies, among other things. Fantastic pop culture scholar.

Sean Hogan is one of those guys who makes music by sampling everyday objects, but his emoticon representation of himself and voice overs are hilarious.

That's everyone I can think of right now.

I'd say it's good advice but for the wrong stated reason. You don't want to set a the "have to drop everything to talk to her whenever she wants" precedent. It's important for both parties to respect the other's space. And it's also important for both parties to know and respect how much attention the other needs in order to feel cared about. I'd say a good rule of thumb for those of us who grew up with texting as a major mode of communication is that you should try to respond to each others' texts within an hour at a most when possible.

I think we need a federal ruling on how politicians are allowed to use social media. I don't think it would be a good idea to ask that politicians never communicate with the public through modern channels. The gap between citizen and representative is already wide enough. What's important though is that we lay some ground rules for what goes on the personal account and what goes on the official account. I'm personally okay with @realDonaldTrump hosting content like this that in no way is meant to reflect the office he holds [not that I necessarily agree with what he's saying]. Stuff like this, however, should definitely be relegated to the official @POTUS or @WhiteHouse accounts created specifically for the purpose of representing the office of the president.

And obviously, all of it should be under great scrutiny to make sure they aren't violating ethics rules.

I like the idea of Twitter as a platform for communication between politics and the people, but not so much in practice. Twitter has the fantastic advantage of being a social network that is both user-oriented [as opposed to community oriented e.g. reddit] but also subscription based. Usually user-oriented social media are networks of two-way relationships – you don't add someone as a friend on Facebook, you request to be their friend, and they have to consent to making that connection. Twitter instead allows anyone to subscribe to Donald Trump's tweets and @ tag him without any requirements. This basically puts everyone on the same playing field. Sure, people with more followers have a greater platform to broadcast their message, but there's nothing separating your tweets from Donald Trump's. You're both just users. You could hold a conversation with him right now if he felt like it.

Where it all falls apart is the character limit. Restricting users to just 140 [now 280] characters is basically forcing conversations to reduce themselves to witty quips, one-liners, and sloganeering on a soapbox. You can't conduct a reddit-style AMA on Twitter because you can't fit any meaningful question or response into just 280 characters. This comment alone is already nearly 1300 characters. Maybe my writing lacks concision, but as you've just shown, the format basically requires anything of substance to circumvent the limitations by uploading images of text or videos of you saying everything that wouldn't have fit in a tweet.

I think Twitter lays an interesting foundation for how political communication could work in the 21st century, but it definitely has some kinks to work out.

I don't think this is too much of an issue. ~misc serves this purpose until the community outgrows the need for it.

if there isn't a dedicated group for a particular topic it also has a bit of a chilling effect because people don't want to post topics that don't really "fit" anywhere.

The Last Jedi fails in a lot of ways – the ham-fisted social commentary, the nonsensical narrative decisions, what have you – but I personally think its greatest failure was in how little it respects the universe. I'm not a "Not My Luke" purist or anything, but the filmmakers heard the woes over how tied down TFA was by the OT and decided the best course of action was to go in the exact opposite direction. I have two major grievances:

    • Luke, obviously. I'm not necessarily against the idea of how they turned him into a cynical asshole, but his actions just straight up don't make sense. Luke is supposed to be a wise Jedi master but he's so ill-disciplined and spontaneous that he'll draw arms against his nephew in his sleep? I was expecting Luke's side of the story to show some tragic misunderstanding in how Ben experienced it, or maybe Ben was lying or something, but no. He was straight up moments away from murdering Ben because he couldn't handle hist teenage angst. We don't even get any flashback scenes attempting to show the progression of how he got to that point, we just have to take Luke at his word that he saw the dark side growing in Ben and that's reason enough to draw a deadly weapon.

    • The Force has no rules any more. In the OT, we watch Luke – the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy – go from nothing to lifting some rocks in three movies, and the most we see in the way of long-distance communication by way of the Force is "use the force, Luke." But even that was between Luke and Obi Wan as a Force ghost. Contrast this with the sequels, in which Rey already uses the force about as well as Anakin in RotS, and several characters can project their likeness across the galaxy. In the first six movies, even the most powerful Force users such as the Jedi counsel and the emperor all had to use holograms for this purpose. Kylo and Luke can just straight up project a perfect image of themselves on another planet. Leia, whom we've never seen use the Force before, can now pull herself out of the vacuum of space. Even some random little kid can pull a broom towards himself without even a little training. Contrast some random kid who has never received formal training to the most powerful Jedi in history receiving training from the greatest Jedi master ever. The Force has no weight any more because the barrier for entry has been shattered. There are no limits to what it can and can't do, or who can do what. The Force is whatever the script needs it to be.

TLJ is a terrible movie in its own right, but the reason it's affecting Solo ticket sales is because it betrayed people's confidence in Disney's respect for the universe. Why bother watching more Star Wars movies if Disney has no interest in making true-blue Star Wars movies?
