I know it’s sometimes considered a canned response but I really think The Alchemist is a great book for any young person to read.

It’s short, so much so you can fit the book in your back pocket. I personally feel that it shows great examples of overcoming odds outside of your control and gives an alternative (by western standards) viewpoint on spirituality and introspection.

It provides a nice language for young boys to access spirituality and emotions in a way that doesn’t feel off putting given the culture they’re often exposed to.

The language of the universe is emotional and artistic simply because that is the way it is. So if you want to master your fate, you should expect not to have precise answers.

Edit: and then yeah, Hunger Games. Everyone should read that. Absolutely everyone.

The Hundred Acre Woods are in Ashdown Forest in south east England. ‘Pooh corner’ is there and the bridge where they play Pooh sticks.

There’s also an old tree that features in the books in some way. I don’t know much more about it than that as I don’t know the stories very well.

It’s also (to my positive surprise) a very entertaining sport to watch. At my old job we all very much got into the winter Olympic curling and it brought us together more as a team!

I wouldn’t say my interest was slightly angry. I really meant that my interest was at a high (or at a peak?) after reading about the two books aforementioned on Wikipedia.

So maybe I did mean ‘peaked’ after all? I actually don’t know now, haha

Edit: currently enjoying an article on dictionary.com about this common misspelling. It’s definitely ’Piqued’. I’ve quite enjoyed this whole thing.

Thank you for the correction. I’ve likely been typing this word wrong for a very long time.

Have you read both of these books? Did you enjoy them? My interest is piqued but would love to know a little more before diving in. Edit: peaked to piqued

I also like woodworking! My grandfather uses a laithe but I’ve only built panels and furniture. I’ve not had a go spinning wood yet.

Mission to Zyxx is great. I enjoyed that one and another recommendation for ars paradoxica so I think that one’s next!

I love audio drama. The ones that are fully acted with sound effects and everything. My favourite is ‘The 4th Ambit’.

I was delighted to discover a new one thats finally outside of the paywall. I’m 2 episodes in and the 3rd just came out. Great sci-fi drama.

“In the climate-ravaged year of 2072, Pura stands as a miraculous green haven, a geoengineered paradise that protects lucky residents from the global catastrophes of heat domes, fires, floods, and droughts. Demetria Lopez is Pura's PR fixer, tirelessly promoting the city's idyllic image. But when she stumbles upon a dark secret that underpins Pura's existence, she must decide who and what she is willing to protect.“

Is anyone else taking a listen? Does anyone else have any sci-fi audio drama favourites?

Every year, on my birthday, I make a huge lasagne. I don’t know how the tradition started but it’s been going for almost 10 years now. Recently I discovered that if I avoid gluten I feel a lot better. So I tried gluten free lasagne sheets. Most gluten free pasta has been awful but these were absolutely fine. I used a recipe from Gaz Oakley and my partner and I made enough to feed about 18 people. It lasted 4 days in my house 🤣

The feature that keeps me locked in though is the ability to have note based lists alongside standard task lists.

Whenever someone asks a question like this I always find myself thinking of Beyond Good And Evil. I think I just really connected with the characters and the universe. At the time it felt like a huge world that you could explore and find interesting secrets. All the characters were flamboyant and interesting. I really loved that game. The storytelling was wonderful.

    My Safari iOS List

Blockebear: A simple blocker that runs on EasyList. The app itself no longer maintained but I’m not sure that matters.

Hush!: Blocks cookie consent forms from loading, where possible. (It does not click on or accept/deny cookies. Just tries to stop the form from loading by blocking scripts).

Banish: Stops ‘use in app’ / ‘this looks better in our app’ banners.

Does washing dishes count as an enjoyed hobby?

I just really enjoy it. If I see a sink full of dishes I want to get in there and get it done.

I’ve tried all the gadgets; the ones that hold washing liquid in the handle, silicone sponges, scrubbers that shoot washing liquid out when you squeeze them like a Turkey baster. Nothing beats a good sponge.

I particularly enjoy an uninterrupted session with headphones in and a podcast on. The meditative power of mundane activity plus a good story is not to be in-considered. (Is that good English? Someone let me know)

An anecdote: I recently met my friends mom who shares the same joy. She has little sensitivity in her hands so she enjoys the feeling of the hot water, plus the movement of doing the scrubbing helps stimulate feeling.
