I recently finished reading The Genesis of Misery by Neon Yang, which is usually described as a queer retelling of Joan of Arc in space with giant mechs, and honestly that's a great description. I really enjoyed it but it's definitely not for everyone. Neopronouns are used commonly throughout the book on many characters, which might be a bit hard to adapt to, but i found it really nice to see in a book.

I am now reading Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. I've read some of his other books, and I was looking for something "shorter" and standalone before I get into The Way of Kings, which is going to be a considerable time investment. I'm enjoying it so far, even though it's a bit rough around the edges due to it being his first published work. The worldbuilding is as detailed as any of his other books though, enough so that (for me) it makes the flaws ignorable.

I love IT's ME! It's got one of the (in my opinion) coolest songs in Kpop, 24HRS, which was produced by the late Sophie. Wannabe is definitely one of their best songs, I enjoy it a lot.

As for recs, sorted by artist:

    • Twice: Fancy You, Formula of Love, and Eyes Wide Open are some of my favorite albums from them, they're really solid and there's few songs I skip from them.
    • f(x): 4 Walls is incredible, most of the songs are bangers, and the title track is my favorite Kpop song without contest. Similarly, Pink Tape is lots of fun and very upbeat.
    • Dreamcatcher: The End of Nightmare is really different from anything else in Kpop. Strong rock influences, catchy music, plain fun.
    • Red Velvet: The Perfect Red Velvet is just classic, all of the songs are really nice and incredibly catchy. I haven't seen a single person who can listen to Peek-a-boo without dancing.

Personally, I really like art that explores concepts of "decay as a positive". I find it very intertesting when decay is portrayed as a positive force that prevents stagnation, as a sign of incoming change, rather than the common "decay is a sign of neglect".

I got to see Origami Angel live this week, so in preparation for that I relistened to most of their albums, but in particular their latest release (The Brightest Days), which is a very fun emo-pop record. It's more poppy than their previous albums, but it's also very enjoyable and just plain fun. Seeing them live was a blast.

Through tiktok I found out about sign crushes motorist's Hurting, which was a nice surprise. It's got very slow and melancholic guitars paired with sad vocals, but it's a nice vibe overall. I'm not sure what genre it is but RYM calls it "slowcore/slacker rock".

On the Soundcloud side, I listened to Silkenwood's sleepover!, vol. 4, which is a collaboration between A Lot of electronic musicians who came together to make really cool, fun, and interesting music in just one weekend. A lot of variety in genre (inside the bigger EDM grouping) between songs, so feel free to skim around if some songs are not to your taste.

I made albumoftheday a while ago. People can submit albums to a pool, and once a day a random album is picked from the pool and displayed on the front page. Everyone gets the same daily album, it's not personalized or anything.

The main goal was to get "small, unknown, not algorithm friendly" album recommendations sourced from my friends/fedi followers, but it's grown quite a bit and that spirit hasn't quite kept as well as I expected (today's album is a Carly Rae Jepsen one, which I wouldn't call small or unknown).

You can go to /history to see the whole past history of albums that have been selected. It's been running for over half a year so there's a fair bit of albums there.

Can you talk a bit more about it/share some links if there's something up? I'm very interested in this since I started working on a very similar concept a while ago. My idea was to make a program where you can write shaders that get passed both the FFT, the waveform, and a bunch of other stuff, but I ended up scrapping it cause it wasn't particularly nice or easy to use.

I recently downloaded Mechabellum after watching this video and I've been enjoying it a lot. It has a lot of the elements I like from an RTS, but it's an auto-battler so I don't have to worry about my APM being terrible. I can just focus on the strategy aspect of it, which is fun and engaging. It's kind of addictive and highly replayable, and it has enough RNG where you can never quite expect what's going to happen, but not enough that it makes you feel cheated.

Before that, I played through Outer Wilds, which is lovely and amazing. I can't recommend it enough. And like everyone else who recommends it, I suggest you read as little as possible about it, since the sense of discovery is one of it's biggest draws. In short, it's a space exploration archeology game.

Of course, not every influencer's Discord server is going to have the same level of quality, but I find it's highly correlated with the type of person the influencer is.

My top 3 albums from last week according to last.fm are (all are Spotify links):

Miracle Musical - Hawaii: Part 2

Really lovely music, kind of experimental. I've been a big fan of it for a while, but I've been listening to it again due to it's use in the popular Grimace Shake videos on Tiktok. If you only listen to one song, I recommend the album's closer, Dream Sweet in Sea Major.

physi - love, from the trees and the sun

Nice, relaxing, and very atmospheric. I've been enjoying listening to it while on walks, it makes me forget I'm walking in a city and not through some fields or forest.

    AZALI - Cats and Classical

AZALI makes some of the coolest "artcore"-like music I've found. All their music is short (<2mins) piano or string compositions, but this album mixes in elements from breakcore and future bass music, and prominantly features Meowsynth, a synthesizer that emulates a cat. It's fun and lighthearted.

    Other

While working I usually listen to jersey club music from Soundcloud. For those who aren't familiar with Jersey Club, it's a very fun and bouncy style of music, which is typically made by remixing existing songs. Some of it's most distinct characteristics are a dotted eighth kick pattern, vocal chops, and a lot of commonly reused samples, like the Baltimore break. It's definitely not for everyone, but I can strongly recommend it if you like fast and loud music.
