Comment on Here are your choices for a self-hosted ebook server in ~books
donio LinkI don't need a server, it's just a bunch of files. I use ebook-convert (CLI tool from Calibre) for conversions and layout changes. My current way of playing is random character select, manual starting item pick and danger level 5. At my skill level this is usually a loss but that makes the occasional wins more satisfying. It's really about exploring each character's playstyle though.
On the boardgame side we've been playing a bunch of YINSH. I am not super into abstracts but this one feels very good. The dynamic board and the cool use of the rings makes it sing.

For setting up your own server Ergo is a great option that gives you chathistory and many other goodies that go a long way towards turning IRC into a first class modern chat experience. Always-on, multi-client and push notifications in particular.
On the client side Halloy (GUI), Senpai (terminal), Goguma (mobile) and Gamja (web) are some modern clients that can take advantage of chathistory and other features.
I moved my private friends/family network to Ergo over a year ago and it has worked out great. I am pretty much the only one who knows anything about IRC, for everyone else it's just another chat app.
I've been using org-mode in Emacs for the past 15 years which is basically text files. Works the same as it always has and if I ever manage to somehow lose my notes it will be entirely my own fault.
