My partner tried the pancake thing a few times, and it always splooged out the vent holes and made a huge mess. Tasted fine, IIRC, and it's possible we did something wrong (too much batter/some ingredient? Maybe we should've accounted for being at a higher elevation? No idea). Not trying to discourage your experiments, just adding a data point.

Maybe a baby? They sound quite a bit different, and adults also apparently scream... which I'd guess sounds even more like demonspawn.

I think it was one of the first, if not the first, yeah. I was dating a guy at the time who was profoundly bothered by it, because all of his zombie invasion contingency plans hinged on them being slow.... Actually, it was after this (or maybe 28 Weeks?) that I asked him if he'd try to save me if I got cornered like in the movie, and his immediate and impassioned "fuck no" made me seriously question the relationship lol. We were young ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you ever wanna talk more about why/how our brains be like they do, feel free to DM me! I love talking about it (special interest) and I'm pretty sure the app I use supports DMs these days.... Or make a post about it and I'll probably find you lol.

if there are people out there that actually believe their AI Friend is "dormant" or "in a limbo state" when they aren't interacting with it.

This kind of hyper-empathy is actually very common in autistic folks. Even when the line between real and fantasy is intellectually clear, it can be seriously emotionally distressing to "cause harm" to inanimate objects. For example, I never played video games as a kid because it upset me too much when my character died. I knew perfectly well that it wasn't real, and with the click of a button it was as if it hadn't happened at all; but it did happen, and it was genuinely upsetting. My mom had to take my Tomagachi away because it was clear I wasn't having fun, but I couldn't let it die! Even now I have to like, manually override that response, and I still prefer games where dying isn't much of a thing.

Go to any autism subreddit and you'll see lots of similar stories~ "I had to buy the ugly toy, because I knew no one else would and it broke my heart," "I hate jello because one time my grandma made it wiggle while saying 'don't eat me!'" etc. Weird, but very much a thing.

I have no idea how widespread this is, but the power company in my area has teamed up with some local bike shops to offer pretty sizable rebates on ebikes. IIRC, $250-$1000, depending on your financial situation, and it's a when-you-buy rebate, not one you have to jump through hoops to have reimbursed. So if this idea piques anyone's interest, it's worth looking in to for your area!

This may not be exactly what you're looking for, but I recently read Cambodian Witness by Someth May and it was a fascinating POV that I haven't seen much (and would love more of). Someth was a teen when the Khmer Rouge took over. He lived in Phnom Penh with his very typical, middle class family, none of whom were terribly political or in any position to mitigate (or even really expect) what was about to come. He documents his day to day in the work camps, the horrors and the (often lucky) choices he made to survive. He wasn't part of the overthrow when it ended, either, and the suddenness with which it both started and ended, and how largely disconnected he was from it (despite being neck-deep the whole time) was what I found most interesting.... And almost comforting in a strange way.

It's definitely helping, just in ways that are difficult to quantify. We tend to think of second language learning as vocabulary lists and grammar rules, but any exposure to an L2 will help build up and strengthen those neural pathways (even, like, watching unfamiliar media without subtitles will do this). You're filling in gaps; quirks and nuances that aren't/can't be explicitly taught, but that will make you sound much more "native"/fluent than just filling in workbooks and rote memorization.
